A multitude of skaters were honoured for their achieve ments over the past year. Also honoured were a couple of longtime club coaches -- Keith Baker and Anne Vernon -- who retired at the end of this season. The competitive and amateur instructor bursaries were handed out as were the CFSA test and gold and diamond medal presentations. The gold achievement is the culmination of years of work by the skaters in both freeskate and dance (the latter also has a further diamond category). Here are this year's honoured recipients ... R ich a rd so n Loss in semis The Oakville Explosion girls U-15 rep team had a disappointing loss in the West Niagara tournament over the May 12/13 weekend, outplaying Pickering in the semifinal but losing 2-1. In the first half, Pickering got out of their own end twice, but capitalized on an Explosion miscue for a 1-0 lead. In the second half, packing the box with as many as eight or nine players, they added a penalty shot, on a "harsh" hand ball call for a 2-0 lead. Jessie Sacripante scored three minutes later but Oakville couldn't add the equalizer. The Explosion didn't allow a goal in the preliminary round, with two wins and a 0-0 tie over London. Oakville Explosion opened the tourney with a 1-0 win over Burlington Blizzard, the lone goal scored by Jessica Pudwell. Sczelecki. Lockhart and Pantin scored in a 3-0 win over Glen Shields. The Oakville Phoenix girls U-14 girls rep team kicked off the season in fine style, winning the West Niagara tournament over the May 12/13 weekend. Oakville were full value for their 2-1 win over London United, controlling most of the championship game. Danielle Bemier scored both goals and had a third one called back. The London side got a late consolation goal to make things interesting with Phoenix goalkeeper Laura Tacchi making two fine saves in the second half. In the semifinal, Oakville had their sec ond meeting with Hamilton Sparta, with the same result -- a win, this one 2-0. The Hamilton team were more determined defensively but goals by Olivia Nadon and Alicia Kuchma sealed the outcome. The quarterfinals were played on a dry, bumpy pitch against a lively, quick Burlington team. However, the Phoenix settled down, putting the ball on the ground to come out 2-0 winners with goals from Danielle Bernier and Olivia Nadon. The second game of the tourna ment was against Hamilton Sparta who put up a fight in the first half, but the Phoenix took control of the game in the second half, winning 4-1. Goals were scored by Amanda Cicchini, Danielle Bernier, Kelly Terceira and Gizelle Panton. The tourney opener resulted in a 10-0 win over Saltfleet.
