Her goal was to swim at university and study law. At just 17 years of age, however, her life took an unexpected turn when an accident, resulting in a severe back injury, meant that she had to give up competitive swimming. "I was lucky," says Christy. "Rather than turn ing his back on a swimmer who could no longer swim, my* coach, Mark Fellner, offered me an opportunity to help out as an assistant with younger children in the club. It was a mentorship that kept me in the sport," says Christy. "That is one of the great things about swim ming. While it is essentially an individual sport, the support system within a swim club -- that is the coaches, fellow swimmers and parents -- are very much a team." Instead of heading off to the United States on a swimming scholarship, Christy went to the University of Toronto and achieved a Masters degree in medicine and physiology. She became the university swim team manager for both men and women. Christy accepted a position with the Cobra Swim Club in Brampton as an age group coach and worked her way up the program. She assisted the head coach with Olympic level swimmers and had the opportunity to restructure both the novice level program and swim school. She coached at the youth and junior national level and brought four of her own swimmers to last year's Olympic trials. Christy became both facilities manager and coach when Cobra took on the challenge of run ning one of the City of Brampton's pools. It included all levels of aquatic programs from div ing, swim lessons, aqua fit classes to school pro grams. "It offered me the opportunity to provide a dif ferent level of service and to really get to know the community", says Christy. "It also gave me an appreciation of just how important fitness is to the education system." Asked why she came to Oakville Aquatic Club, Christy was emphatic. "What impressed me the most, about Oakville is the winning attitude," says Christy. "And not just the swimmers, everyone, coaches, parents, they all share in the understanding that winning is definitely about much more than taking first place. It's about the action and attitude one takes in order to achieve any challenge or reach any goal." "My goal, is to work together with all Oakville Aquatic Club members to provide a progressive and comprehensive competitive swimming pro gram. One that promotes physical excellence and individual success and develops life skills through challenge, commitment, team spirit and good clean fun! "1 want to bring out the best in people in a fun environment." A swim coach, a triathlon coach, a music lover, and most recently a distance runner, Christy Yaremczuk is looking forward to working with her new swim family. She welcomes new members to join the Oakville Aquatic Club. The Oakville Aquatic Club offers a range of swim programs from novice to national level. The Gatquatic Divers, which are based out o f Burlington and Oakville, placed fifth out o f the 13 clubs. Here are the highlights o f the Oakville competitors.
