Walkers to Light the Night at Coronation Park Oct. 3 by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 13 | Thursday, October 1, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Deb Richmond's mother was 45 years old when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of multiple myeloma. She went through several rounds of chemotherapy, experimental treatments and two stem cell transplants over six years before the blood cancer took her life in January 1998. "My mother was only four years older than I am now when she was diagnosed," Richmond shared with the Oakville Beaver. The Oakville resident said it's a reality she becomes more aware of with each passing year. Richmond is hoping to do her part in honouring her mother's memory and finding a cure for multiple myeloma, which affects plasma cells, a kind of white blood cell found in the soft insides of your bone marrow which helps fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs. She's mobilized a group of friends to help organize the second annual Light the Night Walk in Oakville, which is being held Oct. 3 at Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W. The event, which begins with an official lighting ceremony at 7 p.m., is among 200 evening walks happening across North America each fall; with 11 official Canadian Light The Night walks, and dozens of Participants at last year's Light the Night Walk. This year's edition, one of 11 taking place across the country, will be held Oct. 3 at Coronation Park. | Oakville Beaver file photo & Lymphoma Society of Canada -- and to give hope to people battling blood cancers and their families, and survivors, according to Richmond. Pledged walkers carry illuminated lanterns to not only shed light on cancer and its devastating effects, but also showcase their relation to the cause. A white lantern is for blood cancer patients and survivors, a red one is for supporters and a gold one is for those walking in memory of a loved one lost. Funds raised will support breakthrough therapies for blood cancer patients, support services and events for patients and families and educational materials. Richmond, who has lived in Oakville for 12 years, said watching her mother go through the battle has motivated her to do what she can to stop others from going through the same experience. For years she participated in the Toronto national walks before gathering friends to host one in the community in which she lives. "It's a way of giving back and doing something that makes a difference," she said. Richmond is encouraging others to join the cause while enjoying a beautiful night out with community. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. with live music by the Milton's House Of Chords Music Centre, and Get Loud Music. The lantern-lighting ceremony will be followed by a moment of silence to remember those who have been lost. Walkers must raise a minimum of $100 to receive a T-shirt and lantern to walk with. The 5-kilometre walk will commence at 7:30 p.m. in Coronation Park and go to Bronte Harbour. Last year's inaugural event raised $35,000. This year's goal is $40,000, which has already been surpassed.
