www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, October 9, 2015 | 14 Singer hopes Breaking Out will be Blue Jays' anthem by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff As excitement over the Toronto Blue Jays' quest for its third World Series championship reaches a fever pitch, a budding Oakville singer/ songwriter is hoping his song will become the baseball team's anthem. Gus McMillan released his first single Breaking Out ahead of the Jays' Major League Baseball (MLB) playoff run as they took on the Texas Rangers in Game 1 of the American League Divisional Series yesterday (Thursday) at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. "It's the first time the Jays have made the playoffs in 22 years and I decided to record a Come see why we have been voted best optiCal stoRe sinCe 1994! a wide variety Of deSigner BrandS: Oakville's experts in eye Care: Denise pala, niCky pala & mike mCGrath · armaNi · Tory Burch · Versace · ray BaN · marc JacoBs · carrera · coach · Juicy couTure AnD mOre... video to raise support for the team," said the 14-year-old Blue Jays fan. The song was posted on YouTube three days ago and had reached 2,587 hits and counting just before yesterday's game. The Grade 10 Appleby College student admits the song wasn't originally written about the Blue Jays, but says it "shockingly" encapsulates the teams' plight in recent months to where they stand today. "I actually wrote it in March, so it wasn't really Blue Jays season, but then while I was recording it over the summer, that was when the Blue Jays were doing so well and I realized that the lyrics were shockingly lined up with the Blue Jays," he told the Oakville Beaver. The chorus lyrics repeat: "They don't know what we're capable of, no, they don't know our reputation of being quiet and then sparking up the nation. We're taking over, we're breaking out and you won't stop us now." The song is among five the teen has recorded professionally with music producer Tim Thorney, who has worked with Alanis Morissette and The Rankins. He's preparing to release his first EP with Breaking Out as its first track. McMillan only began concentrating on writing last summer, but has more than 40 songs. He also plays piano, something he returned to recently after taking basic classes as a child. His musical inspirations are Ed Sheeran Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, Sia, Lorde and Justin Bieber. McMillan says he's caught the Blue Jays fever. "I've definitely become a bigger fan this year because they're doing so well," he said, noting he's been to a few games this year. His favourite player is Jose Bautista. See his music video at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=NIECUJ8Yj7k.
