Egyptomania takes over at Oakville Museum at Erchless by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff 17 | Friday, October 9, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Egyptomania is coming to Oakville Museum with a variety of activities and art to please the young and young-at-heart's passion for all things ancient Egypt. The local museum has partnered with Ancient Egypt Alive to present a month-long series of events for residents. The latter is a Canadian organization devoted to raising interest, knowledge and excitement around the study and preservation of ancient Egyptian history and culture. Egyptomania will include hands-on workshops for children, an adult lecture and exhibition titled From Oakville to Abydos, showcasing world-renowned Oakville Egyptologist Amice Calverley; as well as 1920s Egyptian-inspired artifacts from the Oakville Museum collection. "Oakville is lucky to have had Amice Calverley living in our town," said Carolyn Cross, Oakville Museum curator of collections. "This amazing woman was an integral part of expeditions to the tombs of Abydos in the 1920s to the 1940s. Courtesy of Amice's niece, Sybil Rampen and the Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre, the Oakville Museum is excited to present From Oakville to Abydos from Oct. 23-Nov. 21." Throughout this month, Oakville Museum -- located at 8 Navy St. -- will also have on display its Egyptian-inspired artifacts, including its costume and textile collection that delves into the history of fashion in Egypt. "There was an obsession with Egyptian antiquities, particularly after the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922," said Cross of why people are so interested in Eygptology. "Egyptian influences pervaded modern culture as Egyptian motifs provided an exotic alternative to the more traditional styles of the day. These motifs would become an integral part of the language of the Art Deco style that would dominate the decorative arts until the mid-1930s." That topic will be explored during the Fashion, Fantasy and Eygptomania in the 1920s lecture, set for Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Oakville Museum. Tomorrow (Friday), children aged eight and older will learn how to decipher the language of the pharaohs by taking take part in the Write like an Egyptian: Hieroglyphs 101 session. Participants will learn the alphabet and famous Egyptian kings' names. The event runs from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. and the cost to participate is $5. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Oct. 25, children aged eight to 12, will get the chance to make their own mummy. The workshop, led by a field archaeologist, will teach participants how to create protective amulets, wrap a doll's body and make a mummy case -- each person will be able to take home their own mummy. The session runs from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and costs $10. To register, call 905-338-4400 or email oakvillemuseum@oakville.ca.
