www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 22, 2015 | 18 No one injured in theatre fire at Sheridan's Trafalgar campus by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff The Oakville Fire Department reports no one was injured after fire broke out within the theatre of Sheridan College's Trafalgar Campus, Monday night. Firefighters were called to Sheridan's Macdonald-Heaslip Hall at around 8:30 p.m. after a light on the theatre stage ignited a curtain, said Deputy Fire Chief George Birtig. Four students were in the theatre working on a class project, noticed the blaze and contacted Sheridan Security who in turn called the fire department. "When we arrived, there was heavy smoke. The stage area was still (on fire) and a piano on the stage was fully involved," said Birtig. "We extinguished it fairly quickly, but the whole building was full of smoke, so we were on scene for some time getting the smoke out of the building." The fire set off an alarm, which resulted in the evacuation of the campus' A, B and D wings. Sheridan College's Director of Corporate Communications and External Relations Christine Szustaczek said the campus' A, B and Oakville firefighters respond to a fire at the Sheridan College theatre at the college's Trafalgar Campus. | photo by Andrew Collins special to the Beaver D wings were closed for the evening to clear a build-up of smoke. She said classes that were scheduled in the Macdonald-Heaslip Hall (theatre) and nearby paint room had all been relocated. Further updates will be posted to Sheridan's Twitter account and on Sheridan's homepage at www.sheridancollege.ca. Szustaczek said the relevant parts of the college have been proactively ventilated since 1:45 a.m. Tuesday and air quality professionals have advised the campus is safe for the Sheridan community. "Air quality tests are ongoing and cleaning of the affected areas has begun," she said in a press release. "Staff from D wing have been relocated while the area is ventilated, while A and B wings have reopened." Sheridan's Occupational Health and Safety staff are currently working on a restoration plan, and Macdonald-Heaslip Hall is expected to reopen in time for the launch of Theatre Sheridan's 2015-16 season. Birtig estimated the fire did about $5,000 worth of property damage. He said there is also significant smoke damage throughout the building, which is not included in that figure.
