The YMCA of Oakville will be accepting nominations until Sunday (Oct. 25), just before midnight. Residents are encouraged to nominate a youth or group they feel is deserving of the recognition for charitable work. Beth Robertson, a teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School was honoured last year as a YMCA Peace Medallion recipient for acting on her belief that the best way to foster peace is to get involved and make sure it happens. Robertson, who has been teaching at the school for more than 30 years, created the Peace and Justice Club (P .J.'s) 12 years ago and has grown the club from 35 members to hundreds of students who are passionate about finding solutions for social issues. Under Robertson's guidance, the P .J.'s organize events, activities and fundraisers for non-profit organizations both locally and globally. Members have helped serve meals at Kerr Street Mission, have gone bowling for the Special Olympics and have rallied in support of missing aboriginal women.
