The event is meant to bring awareness to pulmonary fibrosis and raise funds for the continued search for a cure with all proceeds going to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Association towards idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) research. "It is a great family event with activities for everyone -- a bouncy castle, face painting, food, snacks, and of course indoor cycling," said Alexander-Carew. "You do not need to spin to attend, just come and have a good time." The fundraiser takes place at River Oaks Community Centre, 2400 Sixth Line, from 3-9 p.m. and includes spin classes, crafts, children's activities and the chance to engage with patients, survivors and supporters of pulmonary fibrosis. Alexander-Carew says he expects 100150 people to attend and hopes the event raises between $10,000-$20,000. In June 2011, the Oakville resident was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) -- a disease of unknown cause that creates inflammation and eventually scarring in the lungs. Rob Alexander-Carew Co-founder of Rob's Ride The condition makes it hard to breathe and over time the scarring becomes so thick, the lungs are unable to take in oxygen. In 2012, a friend of Alexander-Carew was shocked at the lack of information out on the disease. Together, they put on a fundraising spinning event on stationary bikes to not only garner more awareness on IPF but to also raise money to improve its diagnosis and treatment. It is estimated 30,000 Canadians suffer from pulmonary fibrosis and 6,000 new cases surface each year, according to a media release. The median survival for IPF patients is between two to three years after diagnosis. In 2012, Alexander-Carew underwent a successful double lung transplant and has vowed to pay it forward with his event.
