Halton Learning Foundation gala imagines the possibilities by Tim Whitnell Metroland West Media 13 | Friday, October 30, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com It's about supplying students with the basics to help them succeed -- and in some cases the means just to stay in school. Imagine ... the Possibilities is the theme of the Halton Learning Foundation's (HLF) annual Benefit Bash, on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 5:30-10 p.m., at the Burlington Convention Centre, 1120 Burloak Dr. It aims to raise $85,000 to support Halton public school students who live at or below the poverty line. "In a community as wealthy as Halton, it's hard to believe that 10 per cent of public school students struggle with the challenges of poverty every day," Lesley Mansfield, executive director of the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF). The HLF is a registered charity that operates as an independent body in collaboration with continued from p.12 of-the-art centres in Oakville, Mississauga and Brampton -- scheduled for completion in 2017. Recipients of the 2015 Pride & Joy Awards: Oakville's Rachel Dean was given the Sean and Lynne Seawright Scholarship Award, a $5,000 scholarship that supports the postsecondary education of students who are current clients or ErinoakKids graduates. "I don't think I would have been able to achieve the level of independence that I have today if it wasn't for ErinoakKids. It has been a huge part of my life since I was young and helped me in so many ways," Dean said in her acceptance speech. Issa Ibrahim (Mississauga) fetched the Little Acorn Award, which recognizes current or former clients discharged in the past year, under age six, who show determination in achieving ErinoakKids celebrates success stories goals, progress in developing skills and whose families help them work toward those goals. Sydney Weaver (Acton) received the Branching Out Award, which recognizes a current ErinoakKids client older than age six who has shown progression in extracurricular activities and has established friendships with other participants. Former client Renée Foessel (Orangeville) took home the Mighty Oak Award for demonstrating community involvement, being an ambassador for youth with disabilities and serving as a mentor and role model for others. Dr. Dale Schisler garnered the Tall Tree Award for his active and engaging role as an ErinoakKids community ambassador. Its focus is to eliminate financial barriers to learning by providing emergency funds to students-in-need, as identified by administrators at elementary and high schools across Halton. So far this school year, the HLF has provided $17,000 in assistance to Halton students. The HLF provides emergency help for students in need, post-secondary scholarships and money to assist schools that have classroom needs that aren't met by core education funding. The foundation also provides funds to schools to provide enriched learning experiences in areas such as arts and music, healthy active living and technology. This year's Benefit Bash will feature performances by several student musicians and local rock band Midlife Chaos, one of whose members is former Halton public board associate director and current executive officer of human resources Jeff Blackwell. A silent auction will be supplemented this year with a live auction featuring vacation getaways. Cost to attend the gala is $125 per person or $900 for a table of eight. It includes a gourmet dinner, cocktails, guest speakers and a raffle. Visit www.haltonlearningfoundation.ca for more information or to register.
