Neighbourhood boys raising money for teacher next door by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Friday, October 30, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Sam Morrison could give lessons on how to be a good neighbour. The 12-year-old Falgarwood Public School student has been dropping off flyers in his neighbourhood over the last two weeks, offering to gut or carve pumpkins to raise money for the Kidney Foundation of Canada in honour of his nextdoor neighbour Sarah Mason. Mason, a 30-year-old Kindergarten teacher, was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) last month after spending 12 days at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). FSGS is a common type of genetic kidney disease that causes scarring in the kidney. Mason's father died last August from the disorder after battling the disease for most of Mason's life. Morrison siad he wanted to do something to help Mason, who he has known since his family moved to the neighbourhood about six years ago. "We're all very close around my street," he said, noting how much the news upset him. The idea to gut and carve pumpkins was inspired by a Letter to the Editor in the Oakville Beaver Sept. 18 edition showcasing two River Oaks Public School students, Cameron Mayhew and Connor Hadlow, who were doing the same thing to raise money for the giving tree at their school for less privileged families. Morrison, with the help of his friend Lucas McNaney, decided it would be a great idea to ex- Sam Morrison, right, along with Luca McNaney, is carving pumpkins to raise funds for the Kidney Foundation. Selling them pre-scooped for $5 and precarved for $8, the boys have already raised about $160 that will go towards funding kidney research and programs and services that will improve the health and quality of life for people with disease. Sarah's mother Brenda Mason said she and her daughter are so touched by Morrison's gesture. Recalling how Morrison waited for them in their driveway a few weeks ago to tell them what he would be up to, she described how it was an emotional moment for them, especially with what they have been going through over the last year. "He told us he was going to help find a cure for this kidney disease and was doing a project at school," she said. "...We both had tears in our eyes and were so thankful to him for his caring and thinking of us." Mason said she's still in shock and is impressed by Morrison's initiative. "He's so amazing, him and his sister both... the way they speak, it's like they've walked out of a movie -- their lines are so funny and so articulate," she said. ecute through the Genius Hour challenge they had in their Grade 7 class, which encourages students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity.
