Blakelock students Matthew French, Sam Joyce and Brock Otten plant a white spruce at Coronation Park as part of their natural ization of the pond and swale which drains into it. The project was to provide a sustainable breeding environment for a variety of amphibian species and to address community con cerns about the appearance and maintenance of the pond and the adjacent swale. In this first of three phases, students planted trees and shrubs that can tolerate `wet feet'. More work will continue in the fall on the swale and pond. H a lto n sch o o ls h o n o u re d fo r fitn e s s e ffo rts Halton District School Board elementary stu dents have whipped themselves into shape and have been honoured for their dedicated efforts. The 32 participating elementary schools earned the highest participation rate in daily fitness pro grams across Canada. So doing, the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD) awarded each school with a banner and certificate at a recent Board meeting. To qualify for the CAHPERD award, students had to participate in vigorous physical activity for a minimum of 15 minutes every day in addition to their regular physical education program. In Halton, this program goes by Quality Daily Fitness (QDF). The banners were presented by Sue Amos, the instructional leader responsible for Physical and Health Education, plus Social Science and Family Studies. Amos was also recognized by the Board by receiving its Award of Excellence for her contribu tion to the QDF program and her 30-year career with the Board. "QDF emphasizes healthy heart and lungs and promotes active lifestyles for children and youth," said Amos, who established QDF in 1990. A FUN FILLED INTENSIVE DANCE A N D PERFORM ING ARTS EXPERIENCE! Flood says he has already come face to face with everything from drug and alcohol occur rence, assaults and accident investigations to domestic disputes and the escorting of prisoners to court and bail hearings. He will also testify in court on some pending cases. "On his first night with me with me we listened in on the Burlington homicide investigation," said Legget, who explained that he is also learning from his counterpart's intensive RCMP training. Flood said he was also exposed to Halton's focus on community policing by being visible at Burlington's Sound of Music Festival and Oakville's Waterfront Festival. "I got a pretty positive feel from the communi ty," he said. "It's been invaluable." Halton Police Inspector Paul Welsh - who explained that the program helps forge strong links to the RCMP - is particularly happy to impart this style of law enforcement to the federal force. "Community-based policing is exactly what the RCMP is looking for," he said. As for Flood, leaving Oakville for his future with the RCMP will be bittersweet. "I've enjoyed it so much it will be difficult to leave after four months," he said. "But it has been really fulfilling."
