Those cham pions of affordable econo-centered basic transportation mod ules have pulled the wraps off ta da! - an honest to goodness near-luxury sedan! The mind-boggling mid-size XG300 is set to go toe to toe with the likes of the Nissan Maxima, Olds Intrigue, Toyota Avalon, VW Passat, Volvo 40series and a number of others in the low-to- mid-$30,000 range. Hyundai believes that aggressive pricing combined with more standard luxury stuff than any of the aforementioned cars is the key to building a win ning upscale family sedan. And they could be right. The XG300 arrives with vir tually every conceivable luxury touch around. If it can be pow ered, heated or covered in ani mal hide, the XG300 probably has it. There's also a premium sixspeaker sound system with CD player included. Under the hood, the loaded Hyundai runs with a 3.0-litre DOHC V6 that produces 190 horsepower. Your only transmission choice is a five-speed 'dual-gate Shiftronic' automatic, which is Hyundai-speak for a gearbox you can shift yourself. Since its introduction in 1973, this trend-setting brand small car always seems to raise the quality bar a few notches with every suc cessive model. For 2001, the Civic stable con sists of just the two-door coupe and the four-door sedan (the hatchback has been dropped). Each were developed sepa rately (the coupe in the United States, the sedan in Japan) to keep the designs as distinctive as possi ble. Despite one less body style, the model lineup is nearly as diverse as before. Both the sedan and coupe are available in DX and LX versions. In addition, there's a sportier and more powerful Si. All Civics employ a 1.7-litre SOHC four-cylinder engine that's both smaller and lighter than the previous motor. The new powerplant puts out 115 horsepower in the DX and LX cars and 127 horsepower in the Si. A five-speed manual transmis sion comes standard on all Civics, while a four-speed automatic is available as an option.
