D4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 25, 2001 Majors fall to powerhouse High Park The Oakville Little League major allstar team lost only their third game of the season on Friday night, against 23 victories, but unfortunately it was enough to derail their playoff aspira tions. The 8-2 verdict marked their second loss to the also vaunted High Park crew who advanced undefeated out of the dis trict playdowns to the provincials. Oakville had earlier lost 2-0 to High Park (as recounted in last Friday's Beaver) to set up a sudden death game with Dundas on Thursday night in the double knock-out tourney. Oakville came through with an impressive 9-0 win, although the play was much closer than the score would indicate with Oakville holding a tenuous 1-0 right through to the fifth inning. That run was manufactured on sin gles by Chris Stewart and Scott DeGroot and Roger Lambert's RBI single. Then in the top of the fifth, the `bunt' brigade took over -- Stewart, Ryan Mallough (2 RBI's with a slash bunt) and Matt Downer (also a slash bunt). Add a double by Ryan Malhotra (2 RBI's), and singles by Lambert and Paul Jurgaitis, and six runs eventually crossed the plate. Oakville added two more runs in the sixth on singles by DeGroot and Jurgaitis and a double (2 RBI's) by Sergio Lujan to close it out. Alden Black looked forward to the contest against the town where he got his baseball start. He did well with 8K's, striking out Dundas pitcher and clean-up hitter Mike Koschenow three times, each time with a runner on base fpr the last out in the first, third and fifth innings. That earned Oakville a shot at the district championship, although they would need to beat undefeated High Park twice. But it was not to be, as High Park shut the door with Friday's 8-2 win. "High Park was full value for their win," said coach/manager Dave Downer. "They are worthy representa tives of our district and should go a long way in future Little League play." On the hitting side, Chris Stewart ended up with three singles (and was a torrid 9/18 in the series) with Ryan Malhotra and Scott DeGroot adding sin gles. A.J. Obrodovich pitched four com pact innings (2 K's), Matt Downer one inning (IK ) and Paul Jurgaitis finished it up with 2 K's. `Horns take first place for 10th straight year The O akville L onghorns are after their ninth straight Northern Football Conference (NFC) cham pionship, and they helped their cause this past Saturday by clinch ing their 10th straight NFC first place finish (including one shared title) with a 55-3 win over Sault Ste. M arie Storm at Bronte Field. The win im proved the `Horns record to 7-0 in the newly expand ed nine-team N FC, and th e y 'll attem pt to make it a perfect regular season this Saturday, 6 p.m., at Bronte Field against M ega City Maddogs. Then, with home field advan tage throughout the playoffs secured, it's a well deserved bye w eek (Aug. 4) with a semifinal date on Aug. 11 and then hopefully the cham pionship on Aug. 18. The Sault went into the game with a very respectable 5-2 record but against the `Horns, who were home after a m ind boggling fiveweek road trip (including a bye), they were no match. The `Horns put up 501 yards on offence including 315 on the ground (on 31 rushes) and 186 in the air (17-for-25). The Storm on the other hand boasted only 75 yards total offence including 27 yards on the ground (on 19 carries) and 48 yards in the air (5-for-13). Coach Tony M olnar was a little surprised at the dom ination, given the Storm 's com petitiveness this year. But he agreed his own charges were glad to be back home after a five-week absence. Five of the eight `Horns touchr dow ns cam e via the air. Q uarterback M ark D em erling accounted for four of them, throw ing two of them to M ike Dingsdale (14 and 15 yds) and one each to Colin Grant (7 yd) and Colin Alie (34 yd). Back up quarterback Domenic Com astro hit Stephen M oore for 11 yards. Luc Roberge closed the game with two rushing touchdow ns (11 and 10 yds) and Derwin Phillips added an earlier T.D. (4 yds). Not surprising, the bulk o f the rushing w as taken care o f by Phillips (84 yards on 15 carries) and Roberge (52 yards on five car ries). Leading the `H orns receiving corps were Colin Alie (101 yards on five receptions, including one touchdown), Jeff Owens (61 yards on three receptions), M ike Dingsdale (45 yards on three recep tions, including tw o touchdowns) and Stephen M oore (39 yards on three receptions, including one touchdown). The leading man in a great defensive cast was Vince Rinella with six tackles. A's have won two tournaments, rained out in a third (Continued from page D2) Manager Bob Ide is back again for his fourth season with the club along with trainer Roland W indisch and coach Steve Moffatt. New additions to the coaching staff this year are Steve Revell and John Cole. The boys captured their first tour nament championship of the season in London. The A's gave up only one run in their round-robin games as they mercied the host team by. a score of 10-0, swept the team from North Toronto 7-0 and easily handled the Stratford team by a score of 4-1. The semifinal game against the team from East London proved to be the most challenging match-up of the weekend as the A's had to stage a come from behind 5-4 victory. That set up the cham pionship final against Cambridge. After falling behind by two runs, the A's bats kicked into high gear as the boys from Oakville took over and mercied the Cubs by a score of 18-2 to capture top honours at the tournament. This past weekend, the Oakville A's competed in the Markham peewee tournament, where they once again ran up a perfect record. Round-robin action saw the A's defeat North York 8-0, Brampton Royals 15-3 and the host team from Markham by a score of 9-5. In the semifinal game, the A's mer cied West Hill by a score of 14-2 after only four-and-a-half innings. The cham pionship final was a rematch with the Brampton Royals that saw a determined Oakville squad come back from an 8-1 deficit to tie up the game at nine runs apiece and force extra innings. In the extra frame, Oakville got the one run they needed and then shut out the Royals in the bottom of the eighth inning to capture the championship. It seems the only thing standing in the way of the A's this year is Mother Nature herself. The A's travelled to Kitchener for their first tournament of the season, where they finished first overall at the end o f the prelim inary round by defeating Kitchener 6-3, Georgetown 22-1 and Cambridge 8-2. However, the semifinal and cham pionship games were cancelled due to thunderstorms. The completion of the tournament has yet to be scheduled. And the A's are hoping for better weather.
