Titling its event Tribute to Courage, the Canada-Ukraine International Assistance Fund, in partnership with Euromaidan Canada Committee under the patronage of Ukrainian Canadian Congress Toronto, paid tribute to those who stood up for what they believed in and started the Ukrainian revolution. On Nov. 29, 2013, when it became clear to the public that Yanukovych wasn't going to sign an association agreement with the European Union to join Europe, many Ukrainians took to the streets in Ukraine's capital of Kiev to express their disapproval of his decision. Months later in February 2014, amid the anti-government protests, Yanukovych fled Kiev. Kuznietsov thanked Canadians for their support, noting Canada's foreign aid was the most pronounced. Other guests included Chad Nilson, a certified Canadian prosthetist/orthotist, who travelled to Ukraine last spring as part of a Ukraine Prosthetic Assistance Project team to fit world-class prosthetics to people who lost their limbs during the revolution and war. Antonina Kumka, one of the main event organizers, told the Oakville Beaver the effort raised more than $35,000, which will be given to the Ukraine Prosthetic Assistance Project to conduct its second phase planned for MarchApril next year. The team, consisting of eight specialists (prosthetists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists), will be working with their Ukrainian counterparts to fit people who have lost their limbs with prosthetics. A soldier-amputee from the U.S. Army will also travel with the team to hold sessions with the local soldiers and civilians on how to overcome the challenges of losing a limb in a conflict. Kumka, a high school mathematics teacher at T.A. Blakelock High School, initiated the project a year ago as a way to help the country she came from. "The project goal is to send Canadian and American prosthetic and rehabilitation specialists to Ukraine to train local specialists in advanced technologies and techniques, as well as fit amputees in the process," she said.
