OTMH now open for business at 3001 Hospital Gate by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Thursday, December 17, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com When one door closes, another opens and that was surely the case for Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) last Sunday. At 6 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 13), Halton Healthcare officially closed its facility at Reynolds Street as staff, patients and volunteers made their way to the newly-opened OTMH at 3001 Hospital Gate (Third Line at Dundas Street). The last baby to be born at the legacy site, built 65 years ago, took place at 7:51 a.m., while the first baby born at the new OTMH was welcomed into the world at 9:28 a.m. Over the 10 hours and eight minutes it took to complete the 11-kilometre move, 270 patients, including those from the intensive care, mental health and maternal child units, were shuttled via eight ambulances and 20 patient transports. A total 280 staff, physicians and volunteers took part, assisted by Health Care Relocations, RNR Patient Transfer Services, and Emergency Medical Services from Halton and Peel. The new Emergency Department saw a total 154 visits on its first day. "During the course of the day, we safely moved all of our in-patients to our new hospital, where they can benefit from the exemplary patient experiences this state-of-the-art facility will help us provide," said the Oakville resident. The move also marked the end of an era, Hardenne noted, with the closing of the historic legacy OTMH on Reynolds Street. "We owe a debt of gratitude to staff, volunteers and physicians who gave of their time, our partners Health Care Relocations and the Emergency Medical Services of Halton and Peel, our community, our patients as well as their families and loved ones," said Hardenne. "Together we have accomplished a significant milestone in our organization's history, one that will help us care for our community now and well into the future." "From early planning that began more than a decade ago, through construction, to treating the first Emergency patient on opening day, I am thrilled to have contributed to the creation of this new state-of-the-art healthcare facility that will touch the lives of so many people in our community," said Dr. Lorne Martin, Halton Healthcare chief of staff. "In addition to having the latest and greatest technologies, our new hospital has also been designed to ensure we can provide a comfortable, private, dignified caring environment for patients and their families. Congratulations to the entire Halton Healthcare team and everyone who played a role in making this new hospital a reality. Job well done!" The new facility, built with a vision of transforming the community hospital experience, aims to foster a healing environment while providing exemplary patient experiences. All services, including the Emergency Department, have been transferred to the new hospital. The original legacy site is closed -- with the sign in front of it now announcing that -- and will be officially decommissioned on March 31, 2016. The Town of Oakville plans to demolish the building. On Monday, Town Council approved a budget of $4.2 million to tear down the building. For more information, visit www. haltonhealthcare.on.ca/new-oakvillehospital.html.
