Two members of the club, Hannah Gula and Kathryn Doran, qualified for the Arizona Grand invitational next month. | photo submitted OGC duo qualifies for U.S. invitational meet Oakville Gymnastic Club members Hannah Gula and Kathryn Doran recently qualified to represent Ontario at an invitational meet next month in Phoenix. Gula (Level 9) and Doran (Level 10) earned their spots with strong performances at the Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) Tour Selection/Elite Canada Screening meet Nov. 13-15 in Belleville. They will travel south for the Arizona Grand Invitational Jan. 2224, as might OGC's Sarah Scholten (a Level 10 alternate). In other recent action, OGC's women's team competed at its first Level 6-plus provincial qualifier of the season, taking home 42 medals from the meet at Futures Gymnastics in Mississauga. Lauren Feaver (Level 6, age 9), Elaine Cousin (Level 6, age 10), Shea Welling (Level 6, age 12), Tendai Zingano (Level 7, age 11), Jordyn Lynch (Level 8, age 15-plus), Gula (Level 9, age 15-plus) and Doran (Level 10, age 15-plus) each won all-around titles as Oakville gymnasts combined for 20 gold medals, 12 silver and 10 bronze. Some of the credit for the OGC female athletes' performance could go to the addition of several coaches to the women's program this year. Monica Covacci has joined Lorne Bobkin and Candice Feinrip coaching Level 6-plus athletes, April Chappell is working with the younger gymnasts and Rosemarie Upfield is teaching participants in the minis program. Remaining meets for OGC athletes include a provincial qualifier in Milton (Jan. 29-30), the Presidential Classic Invitational in Florida (Feb. 12-15), the Gymnix International (March 3-6), the provincial championships (April 3-6) and the Arizona Grand Invitational. Several Rangers players took home additional hardware from the tournament. Marc Donolo, Riley Brown, Mathieu Côté and Nikolas Damolidis combined to win the team relay title during the skills competition, and Zach Wadden won the essay contest to earn a free week at an upcoming Can/ Am hockey school. Other members of the team are Jack Smales, Owen Gabany, Marcus Montanino, Tyler Henshaw, Matthew Taylor, Deven Kandola, Ryan Gracie, Theo Montanino, Daniel Rokicki, Conor Thacker and Tristan Byrne. Blades win both weekend games in OJHL play The Oakville Blades won both of their Ontario Junior Hockey League games to improve the South Division leaders' record to 21-10-3. Jenner, Kessler to play in CWHL all-star game Oakville's Brianne Jenner and Christina Kessler have been named to the Canadian Women's Hockey League all-star game roster. Jenner, in her first season with the Calgary Inferno, leads the CWHL in assists (11) and plus/minus (plus-18) and is fifth overall in league scoring with 16 points in 14 games with the first-place Infernos. Kessler, the 2014 Clarkson Cup MVP , is 2-6-1 with a 3.47 goalsagainst average and a .908 save percentage. It will be the second straight all-star appearance for Kessler. The game will be held Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Another bronze for Duffy, short track relay team For the second week in a row, Oakville's Patrick Duffy and the Canadian men's short track speed skating relay team brought home a World Cup bronze medal. The Canadian team finished third in the 5,000-metre relay Sunday in Shanghai despite having Samuel Girard taken down by a fallen Chinese skater with 22 laps remaining in the race. Girard got back up and the Canadians recovered to finish third. It was the third World Cup medal for the relay team this season, having won gold in Toronto and bronze in Nagoya, Japan. Earlier in the meet, Duffy finished sixth in the 1,000m after placing second in the B final.
