www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, January 15, 2016 | 8 O Oakville leads in efforts to reduce impacts of climate change akville is a leading municipality in climate change commitment and action in Canada. We have achieved amazing accomplishments with our Climate Change Strategy. We are one of 30 municipalities to participate in nationallyrecognized climate protection programs. We have been recognized as a leader for achieving top milestones in mitigating and adapting to climate change. The Town of Oakville has set demanding climate change targets, achieved reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and implemented climate change adaptation actions. The Town has also created a key document for residents -- Oakville's Climate Change Primer. It Rob Burton Mayor of Oakville advises residents of tips and tools to help them conserve energy and live more sustainably, like using public transit and preparing for extreme weather, to help take action to fight climate change at home. The Town of Oakville continues to look for opportunities where we can further increase our efforts to fight climate change. The target to reduce our corporate greenhouse gases is set at 80 per cent for 2050. This target is in line with the targets of the federal and provincial governments and global leaders. We are one of the few municipalities to set our target this high. As such, we have implemented action plans and policies at the town to ensure we achieve this target. The Compact of Mayors is the world's largest coalition of municipal leaders addressing climate change. These mayors have pledged to track their municipalities' strategies and progress in reducing the impacts of climate change. As a member of this group, the Town's commitment to measuring the impact of our climate change actions further promotes the importance of acting locally in the fight against climate change. Recently, Canada, along with 200 other countries, adopted the first significant global pact to deal with climate change. We are proud Canada has committed to this plan. We will continue our efforts in Oakville, leading the way for other municipalities. We all have a part to play in the fight against climate change.
