All-American final at memorial tournament Sunday's championship game at the third annual Adam Fedoruk Memorial Tournament, held over the weekend, turned out to be an allAmerican affair with Amherst, New York break ing through for a 5-3 win over Ypslanti, M ich ig an . The tournament is in honour of an Oakville Little League player who lost his life in a trag ic house fire three years ago. John Fedoruk, father of Adam, made the presentation. There was some measure o f consolation for Oakville. After opening with a tough 2-0 loss to eventual finalist Ypslanti, Oakville reeled off three straight wins to claim the consolation championship. Against Ypslanti, Oakville ran into a hot pitcher. "Our boys just couldn't get to him ," said Oakville m anager Dave Downer. "We had our chances but he rose to the occasion. Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance to play them again." (See 'Little Leaguers' page D6) Televised skins game will bring top players to Oakville Curling Club The Oakville Curling Club has been chosen to host the M&M M eat Shops Skins Game which will be held Dec. 28-30. The club had been hoping to have a nationally televised event take place in its eight-sheet arena, constructed in 1994, said club gen eral m anager Ross Tousaw. This prem ier event attracts the best curlers in the world, most of whom are form er Canadian and world cham pions, he added. Joining the likes o f skips Wayne M iddaugh, K evin M artin, Jeff Stoughton, Randy Ferbey, Guy Hemmings and Russ Howard will be the two top money leaders on the World Curling Tour in early December. The players will be com peting for $75,000. According to Tousaw, this m ajor curling event w ill provide an opportunity to show case the Oakville Curling Club, the Town of Oakville and, o f course, some of the w orld's best curlers. Tousaw said the event will begin the Friday night (Dec. 28) with the eight teams taking to the ice. The winners move on to the sem ifinals to be played on the Saturday (December 29). The final will be played on the Sunday afternoon (Dec. 30). The sem ifinals and final will be televised nationally on Sportsnet. The M&M M eat Shop Skins Game is produced by Max Event, an event leader in sports produc tion with particular emphasis on curling. Form er world curling champion Paul Savage (and the winner of last y ear's world lefthanders' champi onship, which is held annually at the Oakville club) is responsible for this m ajor curling event. The Oakville Coyotes bantam roller hockey team have had quite a summer, winning the prestigious North Am erican Roller Hockey Championship (NARCh) in Estero, Florida. They won despite giving up a year in age, as they were a minor age team playing in a major age tournament. After a tie in their first game -- 33 with M ission A rm adillos from California -- the Coyotes went unde feated through the remainder of the tournament.
