Wednesday. September 5, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Plan now for Fall (lasses with this informative guide, presented by /^Q akvule B eaver Tips for keeping children safe on school buses With the new school year underway yellow school buses are back out on Oakville roadways driving students to their first day of school. Most injuries to school children who ride school buses occur outside of the school bus. The following tips will assist in keeping kids safe. Tips for Kids Wait for the bus in a group with other students. Stand well back from the roadside and pay attention to traffic. Do not play on snow banks while waiting for the bus, when the bus is near or when getting off the bus. Board the bus in single file, using the handrail. Find a seat right away. While the bus is moving, stay seat ed and face the front. Talk quietly. Keep the aisle clear. Keep arms and heads inside the bus. Do not throw things inside the bus or out the window. Do not eat or drink on the bus. When the bus stops, it is okay to stand and leave the bus, starting with those seated in the front of the bus. Use the handrail when leaving the bus. Once off the bus, walk away from the bus and stay away. If you've dropped something when getting off the bus, just leave it. When crossing the street after exit ing the bus, walk far enough in front of the bus so that the driver can see you. Always look all ways before cross ing the street. Never play near a bus and especial ly never play near bus wheels. Always obey the bus patrol. "Children sometimes forget safety rules and don't always pay attention to traffic when leaving the school bus or walking home, so motorists must," Bert Killian, president and general manager of the Ontario Safety League. "Drivers need to take precautions where children are concerned." Tips for Motorists When school buses' upper, alternat ing red lights are flashing and/or the stop sign arm is extended, motorists approach ing from either direction must stop. (If a roadway has a median, traffic travelling in the opposite direction of the bus does not have to stop for the flashing lights or stop sign arm.) Children have less peripheral vision than adults and cannot see approaching vehicles from the comer of their eyes. Children cannot judge distance, speed or gaps in traffic and may not detect vehicle movement. Parked cars often block children's views of oncoming traffic. Always be aware of children, drive slowly and adhere to posted speed limits. School buses must stop at all rail way crossings. If you are following a school bus, be prepared to stop. dance t im e Dancewear & Shoes for Ballet, Tap, Jazz & Highland 4012 N ew St., (at Walker's Ln) B urlington O p e n S u n d a y s, N o o n o p m fro m A u g . 26 - S e p t 9 M o n -F ri: 10am -8pm , Sat: 10am -5ptn I want to be at the top of my class.
