Wednesday, September 5, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C7 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Brush Strokes A size, subject and price to suit everyone By Carol Baldwin ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR stroke of creativity got Judy Moore and Gerry Manno where they are today - on the threshold of opening their first art exhibition. These two Oakville artists have displayed their work in group shows and juried shows with the Oakville Arts Society (OAS) in the past, but both consider Brush Strokes, which opens on Saturday, to be their first "solo show", even though two artists will be featured. Moore, 54, was an operating-room nurse in her former life; Manno, 47, was a financial consul tant. And each claims that it was pragmatic par ents that encouraged them to ignore art as a career and pursue something more practical after high school. "According to my dad it (art) was not a useful thing to do," says Moore. Manno agrees, adding, that his father suggest ed that art "w on't feed you." Now in their second careers, these watercolour artists look back on their jobs and realize that they approached them with a certain creativity that some of their colleagues seemed to lack. "If you're creative, you can apply it to any thing," says Manno. "It's a mind-set," adds Moore. "All along I was A Photo by Barrie Erskine Gerry Manno holds his painting. Robert Harling's story takes place in a quaint Louisiana town where six women meet each week at the local beauty par lour to laugh, cry and gossip.
