F ath e r Joe S alm , w ho w as in V ietnam in 1962, is the new pastor at St. C o lu m ba's C hurch, also know n as T urner C hapel at 37 Lakeshore Rd. W. T his 111-year-old building, erected by escaped N egro slaves arriving here via the U nderground R ailroad from the U nited States, served as O akville's AME (A frican M eth o d ist E piscopalian) C hurch for a century. A historical plaque describing its history in a nutshell stands in front o f the church. T he building w as leased by the AM E C hurch to the A nglican C hurch, Independent, C anada Synod, about 10 years ago to launch St. C olum ba's. In rec en t years, St. C o lu m b a 's sm all co n g re g atio n ren o v a ted the building, revitalizing it as a small, intim ate country church. . "T he congregation spent m ore than $150,000 to renovate this building," said F ather Joe. `T h is church was co n d e m n e d , it w as in such bad shape." So, how did Father Joe, 61, end up at St. C olum ba's? It began in the m ilitary. He joined the U nited States A ir Force in 1959. "I had a three-m onth tour o f duty in Vietnam before the w ar broke out in 1962. In O ctober 1 9 6 2 ,1 was assigned to the C uban M issile C risis, but I ended up not going. T he closest I got w as the H om estead A ir Force Base ju st outside o f M iam i. " I w as released the sam e day (President) John K ennedy w as shot, Nov. 23, 1963. " But, I stayed w ith the US A ir F orce R eserves until 1972, in its m ed ical corps." T hree years later, he w as in a Buffalo hospital w ith a serious blood clot in his leg. "I ended up being in the hospital fo r 28 days. I had a lot o f tim e in my hands to review my life, and as I preach so often, G od found me. I did n 't find G od, he found m e." O nce out o f hospital, he started d o in g v o lu n te er w ork fo r the Episcopal D iocese o f W estern New York, in its N ursing H om e M inistries. "I 'b ecam e D irector o f its N ursing H om e M inistry fo r all six counties that m ake up W estern N ew York." He w as in charge o f arranging lay readers, finding people to visit resi dents, and conducting evening ser vices. "I applied to the D iocese to be con sidered a candidate fo r H oly O rders." C ocktails w ill be served to arriving guests at 6:30 p.m. Jazz, by the O akville Q uartet, will fill the air by 7 p.m. and the 1910 b uilt, fu lly refu rb ish ed tall ship Kajam a, will leave Toronto H arbour for a three-hour cruise at 7:30 p.m. As guests m ingle w ith the Canadian G olf H all o f F am e in d u ctees, a m enu including a `sm ashed potato bar,' fresh oysters, sm oked salm on and sushi, w ill be serv ed at various stations around the top deck. Tickets for this event are limited to 200 and cost $175 per person. A tax receipt for $100 w ill be issued for each ticket. T his event, in part, will support the w ork done by the H alton Traum a Centre, w hich is partnering with the Canadian G o lf H all o f Fam e to host this cruise. This centre w as established in 1983 to help children and their families who have experienced child sexual abuse. In 1999. it expanded its m andate to treat additional circum stances such as em otional, physical, and psychologi cal abuse, and neglect. "T hen, tw o w eeks before my o rdi nation date in 1 9 8 2 ,1 w rote the bish op. I w asn't ready to be a full tim e m inister at that tim e." Instead, he becam e the People's W arden at St. A n d rew 's Parish in Buffalo. He rem ained there fo r about 10 years --as a volunteer. "In M ay 1993 I w as told to visit B ishop P e te r G o o d rich (o f the A n g lican C h u rch , In d ep en d en t) in N iag ara F alls. H e rec o g n ized my study, and on A pril 10, 1994, I was ordained as a D eacon." He w as assigned to, St. G eorge's A nglican C hurch in Stoney Creek. On Sept. 7 o f that year, he w as ordained to the priesthood. A bout four years ago, he w as nam ed Stoney C reek 's V olunteer o f the Year fo r his w ork in the church. H e rem ain ed at St. G eorge's until 1999. T hat year, he w as appointed to St. C olum ba's but could not accept due to ailing health. He underw ent surgery to open clogged arteries leading to his heart. T he surgery w as successful. "I've been very fortunate, th ere's no dam age to my heart. "Today m y health is great, w onder ful. L ife is good." H e cam e to C olu m b a's in M arch this year - as a volunteer, taking over from Rev. Ross N orton, w ho is cu r rently on sabbatical. "All o f my w ork in the m inistry has been as a volunteer." F ath e r Jo e su p p o rted h im se lf financially by w orking as a petroleum contractor, a jo b h e 's held since 1967. He retired in M arch. "I 've never been paid for any o f my spiritual leadership." F ather Joe w ants to "grow " St. C olum ba's by having a "larger pres ence" in the com m unity. "I w ant to m ake ourselves know n to O akville people. We have an open door policy. W e're open to all people reg a rd le ss o f th e ir ch u rch b ac k ground. "A nd, I'm a firm believer in open com m union. "I 'm a firm believer in spirituality. People are hungry and are looking for som ething oth er than a q uick fix, w hich do esn 't w ork." Father Joe adds St. C olu m b a's is a traditional A nglican church adhering to the 39 A rticles o f Religion, co n tain ed in the A n g lican C h u rch , Independent, C anada S ynod's Book o f Com m on P rayer printed in 1991. C urrently, betw een 20 and 25 fam ilies attend the 11 a.m. Sunday ser vices. "I w ould like to see St. C olum ba's grow. This building should alw ays be used as a church."
