Oakville teen Katherine Bailey thinks T.A. Blakelock High School could teach a thing or two to others when it comes to its breakfast program. When you walk into the school cafeteria, students are surprisingly happy and in good spirits for 7:30 a.m., as they pick up breakfast, chat with friends and enjoy the music being played in the background just before classes start, said the Grade 12 student who has been volunteering her time every school morning since she was in Grade 11. About 200 students attend the program daily, 1,000 a week, which is equivalent to 25 per cent of the school's population, Bailey explained. She said she thinks it's that kind of atmosphere that's needed to make a difference in student nutrition across the province. Bailey will be among 11 student ambassadors, representing student nutrition agencies from across the province, taking part in Agents of Change Summit on Monday (Feb. 8) at Daniels Spectrum in Toronto from 8:30-10 a.m. Hosted by The Grocery Foundation, in partnership with the Ontario Student Nutrition Program Network, including the lead agencies that represent 4,500 programs across the province, the event aims to provide Katherine Bailey a stage for youths to share their views on the success of programs in their schools with leaders from the consumer goods and retail industry and other stakeholders. The Grocery Foundation Executive Director Michelle Scott said youths and children are becoming more socially engaged in all kinds of initiatives. The summit aims to provide a platform to hear from students about their thoughts on nutrition programs. "We believe students have an important voice and we want to understand from them how we can get in the conversation with them to understand what's going on," said Scott. Agents of Change Summit is part of The Grocery Foundation's Toonies For Tummies campaign, which asks residents buying groceries at their local store to donate $2 to give breakfast to a hungry child in their own community. The campaign, which runs between Feb. 4-18 has been running for a number of years to help support 4,500 nutrition programs in Ontario that feed as many as 800,000 schoolaged children, said Scott. "...There are lots of statistics around saying that if your tummy is nourished, you can concentrate and do better in your school work," she said, noting why Toonies For Tummies was created. With that said, one in six children are going to school without nourishment in the morning, Scott explained. "The summit is going to allow us to now talk about the impact that student nutrition programs have in the school system," she said. Bailey said she believes the breakfast program is contributing to the positive school environment at T.A. Blakelock. She'll be sharing at the summit why she believes it works and what she thinks should be adopted by all nutrition programs. see Removing on p.17 2 f o r 1 C R U I S E FA R E S p lu s F R E E A I R FA R E * choose one: FREE - Shore Excursions FREE - Beverage Package FREE - Shipboard Credit plus: FREE - Unlimited Internet PLUS CRUISE HOLIDAYS EXCLUSIVE $200 Per Stateroom Shipboard Credit FREE Pre-Paid Gratuities Glacial Explorer 12 days | Jun 16, 2016 REGATTA Seattle; Cruising the Inside Passage; Ketchikan; Wrangell; Juneau; Haines; Cruising Hubbard Glacier; Icy Strait Point (Hoonah); Sitka; Cruising the Outside Passage; Victoria; Vancouver; Seattle Whimsical Waterways 12 days | Sep 3, 2016 MARINA Stockholm; Helsinki; St. Petersburg two overnights; Tallinn; Klaipeda; Gdansk (Gdynia); Berlin (Warnemünde); Copenhagen; Oslo; Amsterdam, SEATTLE to SEATTLE STOCKHOLM to AMSTERDAM DELUXE OCEAN VIEW Fares from $ DELUXE OCEAN VIEW Fares from $ Catagory C2 4,899 per guest* Catagory C 6,899 per guest* Choose one FREE: 4 Shore Excursions, Beverage Package or $ 400 Shipboard Credit* Choose one FREE: 4 Shore Excursions, Beverage Package or $ 400 Shipboard Credit* Contact Cruise Holidays of Oakville (905) 337-2228 info@cruiseholidaysoakville.com www.cruiseholidaysoakville.com *Offers and fares are subject to change at any time.
