Cancer society to receive $60,000 one-year donation By Wilma Blokhuis BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR Tony D 'Attoma has literally put his money where his mouth is. The president and co-owner of Vision Transportation presented the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Unit, with a cheque for $15,209. The cheque, representing a percent age of his gross quarterly sales, is the first of a four-part donation. "I hope to donate $60,000," says D 'Attoma who feels he cannot do enough for cancer research. "I'm chal lenging all other companies to do the same thing." The company donation comes in addition to $138,000 D'Attoma raised from the six annual Peter D 'Attoma M emorial G olf Tournaments he's organized with his brother Frank since his father Peter died from lung cancer. "He had quit smoking before he died . . . (but it was too late)." Of his company donation, D'Attoma says "we've been very for tunate, business is good, and I want to do something to help. I hope there are other companies out there, not just in Oakville, who will do the same thing." And, similar to the golf tourna ments, the company donation is in memory of D 'Attoma's father. "Six years ago when my father died, we decided to do something, and organized the golf tournaments." However, D 'Attoma felt he wasn't doing enough. "For the past year. I've been think ing about doing something from my company, and I decided to take a per centage of the proceeds from sales and donate them quarterly to the cancer society. "Everybody knows somebody who suffers from cancer, and we're lucky to be able to give something back. Hopefully we can do something to beat this thing. "Just imagine if we had donated nothing over the last 20 years," con tinued D 'Attoma. "We wouldn't have the advances in research we have today," research that may have helped save the lives of two of his relatives. His mother-in-law Audrey Fraser was diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer about 10 years ago, "and my Uncle John D 'Attoma had the same kind of cancer about six years ago." Both survivors live in Oakville. "They are survivors thanks to the research," concluded D 'Attoma. Vision Transportation is co-owned by Jason Georgie, vice-president.
