Serbians open banquet centre By Wilma Blokhuis BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR A new community centre was recently dedicated by the St. Peter and Paul Serbian Orthodox Church on Sunday. The St. Peter and Paul Serbian Community Banquet Centre was dedi cated on Sept. 16. Special guests includ ed Bishop Longin from Chicago and Bishop Georgie from Milton. The 5,100 square foot brick building, on the north side of Dundas Street between Neyagawa Boulevard and Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery, features a large banquet centre with a hardwood floor and large windows. The centre, built almost entirely by church members who volunteered their expertise, took two years to construct. As a result, the congregation was able to cut construction costs in half to between $300,000 and $400,000, "instead of the $700,000 to $800,000 it would have cost us," said church mem ber Milan Vucak, one of the volunteers working at the site. "We're very proud of this building," he enthuses. "It's a beautiful building. All of us are very proud to have built it ourselves without outside help. It was built by church members." Architect Brian Williams of Milton designed the building. "We owe a little bit of money, but we have ongoing fundraising to pay for it." However, the church is grateful for donations it has received from Mattamy Homes for the foundation and sod, and from Nelmar Drywall and Marel Drywall for drywall and taping materi al - each company donated half. "The donations of the drywall repre sented a saving of tens of thousands of dollars," said Vucak.
