Photo by Riziero Vertolli The Blue Watermelon brings a bit of Mexico to Oakville By Nancy Alexander SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER You can't pass a shop with a name like `The Blue Watermelon ' without having your curiosity get the bet ter of you. And that's exactly what owner Laura Perdomo was hoping when she came up with the eye-catching name. Once inside the Lakeshore Road East shop, plenty of gorgeous things greet the eye, even though there isn't a blue watermelon in sight. Perdomo, who hails from Mexico, opened her unique furniture and accessories shop in the summer after spending an intense month and a half transforming the bare walls into something resembling a sun-splashed Mexican villa. Along with her partner Dr. Leopoldo Chabert, a res ident of Oakville, Perdomo searched throughout the many regions of Mexico to bring back the distinctive work of dozens of artisans. Perdomo says many of the customers she sees have travelled in Mexico and have developed a fondness for the vibrant colours and rustic flavour of Mexican hand icrafts. Whether it be large-scale pieces such as an elaborate armoire with hand-carved sunflowers, rustic iron chan deliers or hand-painted ceramic bowls and serving pieces in brilliant, primary colours, The Blue Watermelon serves up an authentic slice of Mexico. Look in one comer and you'll find the whimsical, hand-carved faces of angels, their cheeks puffed out to blow away the clouds. .In another you'll find beautiful hand-woven rugs in a riot of colours taking their place next to pewter frames, palm baskets, distinctive black clay sculptures, or ceramic address plaques. Perdomo says she tries to focus on finding unique pieces for the store. She feels that people are increas ingly looking to furnish their homes with one of a kind pieces that make a statement. A case in point would be a large wood and iron cof fee table created from a rustic old door. Another would be a pair of buffet lamps, columns created of iron and mesh that would look equally at home in a modem or country setting. Even the china place settings carried in the store, which at first glance appear to feature a single blue pat tern taken from nature, are individually hand-painted with a different bird, butterfly or scene on every single plate, bowl or serving piece. In short, The Blue Watermelon lives up to its name-- a place where you'll find the unusual, the distinctive and the beautiful for your home or for a gift. The Blue Watermelon is located at 290 Lakeshore Road East. Lynn Hutton: closing doors of her business after 23 years. tomers and dedication of her staff many of whom have already found other work. Hutton is referring clients to The Rosewater Spa. Over the years, Hutton has support ed "numerous" charities through fash ion shows. "I've done thousands of them," she says, "too many to men tion." Sticking out in her mind are shows she's organized and hosted for the Women's Centre, Halton W omen's Place, Salvation Army, Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Lions Club, Oakville Big Sisters, and a num ber of local churches.
