Director of Education Lou Piovesan said the commissionaires will assist with the supervision of hallways, cafeteria, outside grounds, including parking lots, as well as to serve as a deterrent to tres passers. They will also assist with the adherence to the Board's non-smoking policy on school property and help to reduce vandalism. "This creative strategy is consistent with the focus and initiatives under the Safe Schools Act, in terms of ensuring a safer learning and working environ ment," said Bailey. "The safety of our students and staff is paramount for our Board." Based on school size, two commis sionaires have been placed at Oakville's St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Thomas Aquinas High Schools, as well as in Notre Dame and Bishop Reding. One commissionaire is at Assumption Secondary School. "With the start of the school year, all of our school communities have wel comed these individuals, who provide a visible presence with their uniform and a much appreciated service," said Piovesan. Risk Watch is a new educational ini tiative with age appropriate curriculum and has been developed for all elementary school grades. The intent of the program is to reduce and eliminate preventable trau matic injuries. Elementary school youth experience heightened safety awareness through classroom sessions delivered by teachers. The Risk Watch program allows stu dents and parents the opportunity to learn more about preventable injuries. The program encompasses fire and bum prevention, motor vehicle, bike and pedestrian safety, firearms, chok ing, suffocation, strangulation, water safety and poisoning components. Risk Watch is a trademark program developed by the National Fire Protection Association and is endorsed by the Ontario Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council. CORE is a membership-based pro gram with the Town of Oakville's Parks & Recreation department. Its workshop series kicks off the autumn season with How to Increase the Profile o f Your Organization.
