(That's drywall, to the layman.) Our parent company is locat ed in the United States and we essentially carry on the same business in parallel - the American co u n terp art takes care of the American m arket and the Canadian division takes care of the Canadian m arket. Occasionally, an American call will come into our custom er service centre in error. This was such a call. This call came in on Thurs. Sept. 13; two days after the World Trade Center had been destroyed. Ordinarily, the accent of the speak er tells us fairly quickly w hether a call is domestic or from the U.S. but not in this case. We engaged in the usual conversation th at occurs in custom er service - a friendly banter aimed at subtly assessing quickly but not peremptorily, w hat the custom er is look ing for. He m entioned that I sounded partic ularly cheerful and happy. I laughed and to r e a c h o u t replied that life is good! He paused and repeated the phrase, more to himself than to me. Yes, he said, life is good. I noticed a slight change in voice which prompted me to ask if he was perhaps phon ing from the U.S. When he answered in the affirmative, I suggested that he call our par ent company on that side of the border and th at he was presently calling Canada from where we cannot ship to him in any case. "Where is your head office?" he asked. I began to say Chicago and then paused. I recalled th at only a few days before, they had been evacuated due to the terrorist attack. It seemed to me that I had since received an email indicating the office was back up and running. As I gave him the number, I added that they were now `back'. The fact th at he never questioned what I m eant by `back' indi cated to me that he understood the inference. He thanked me for my help and before end ing the phone call, I told him th at I was sorry about their situation. Now, keep in m ind that I hear a lot of voic es in a day and I talk to a lot of people. `Normal volume' for us means approximately Open fires posing hazard in north This morning I walked my dog as usual in the woods that are situated south of Upper Middle Road and east of Bronte Road, reached via a path off Stonecutter Drive in Glen Abbey. Far back in the woods I found a fire smoulder ing at the roots of the large pine trees that grow there. I called the fire 'department on my cell phone and walked them to the site where they are now extinguishing the fire. They were unable to bring the truck anywhere close, and had to refill the backpack they had brought with water from the creek, a couple of minutes walk away. They hacked at the roots of the trees with an axe and spread the smoking soil with a shovel. Letters to the Editor It is evident from the ashes and blackened tree trunks that fires are set here regularly. Broken beer bottles and other garbage are often left strewn around. According to the fire fighters, this is not the first time that they have been called to deal with a fire at this location. The people responsible must be made aware that they are running a grave risk of causing a forest fire. I don't know how they can be reached, but I hope that one of them will see this letter. Anna Collins 500 phone calls a day. Having said that, the next thing he said completely took me aback. "We're sorry about our news too. Pray for us." I was stunned. "Pray for us". The age-old penitents' m antra, a mortal being's admission of ulti mate entreaty for cosmic assistance, the quintessential metaphysical equivalent of "give me a hand, will ya'. To ask for prayer is, spiritually speaking, sending out a SOS. To hear this coming from an ordinary paean would be expected but from arguably the most powerful nation in the world? I was arrested by the absolute earnestnesswith which th at request was uttered. It left me speechless. The U.S. asking for help? It was because of its projected invincibility that it was attacked! The World Trade Center was the financial altar at which the capitalist world worshipped - now permanently dese crated. The attack's ferocity was com m ensu rate with the power and importance attrib uted to the target. In a way, it was a back wards compliment. Yet here was this weary voice on the line, disarming in its honesty and helplessness. One voice, one American. Not a world power. Not a nation. One American. The people killed, died one at a time, asphyxiated one at a time, plummeted, phoned their m others or e-mailed their wives, one at a time. As I write this, the little neighbour boys are practising their skateboarding skills on the street in front of our house. One wears a helm et with a huge sticker of the Canadian flag on the front. It is boldly displayed, the traditional red and w hite symbol th at declares our national identity. For him, for us, the maple leaf is a talisman, not a target. He skateboards on with his focus on negoti ating the curb. Lucky kid. A Canadian. Life is good. Dreams came true at trying time On behalf of Sunshine Dreams for Kids, the organizers of the 39th Dreamlift on Sept. 11 ,1 would like to thank the many people who together made the trip the success it was. What was intended to be a one-day trip to Walt Disney World became a threeday odyssey for children and parents, Volunteers and their families. In the midst of it all, wonderful people on both sides of the border pulled togeth er to ensure that Sunshine children and those looking after them had their needs met and that they were able to enjoy themselves in Orlando. It may prove impossible to suffi ciently recognize everyone's contribu tions to this effort, but we will try. Hearty thanks to the Optimist Club of New Hamburg, which sponsored and participated in the Dreamlift, and to the doctor, physiotherapists, nurses, one-on-one caregivers, and the volun teers who participated as buddies for the trip. You made the needs of the children a priority and provided a warm, caring atmosphere far away from home. To Erinoak, which provided med ical support for the Dreamlift and allowed their staff to participate as buddies, thank you for your constant ongoing support. To Skyservice, the aircraft carrier for the trip, a warm "thank you" for constantly communi cating with us and providing extra staff to assist the volunteers. To media representatives who stayed with the group in Orlando and other media sources at home, thank you for your concern and your support. To the Burlington firefighters, Sunshine is grateful for your assis tance lifting the children on and off the plane and being available on short notice. To the John C. The next stage of the project is to reconstruct Bronte Road from Rebecca Street south to Sovereign Street. In order to reconstruct Bronte Road between Rebecca Street and Sovereign Street, it will be necessary to close the road to through traffic for the period September 24, 2001 to November 23,2001. During this time, only local and emergency access on Bronte Road within the closure limits will be permitted. The through traffic detour route will be via Rebecca Street to either Burloak Drive and/or Third Line south to Lakeshore Road. The Town will make every effort to accelerate the project schedule and re-open Bronte Road to through traffic earlier if possible.
