The beer's in the fridge at three local supermarkets by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, February 11, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The beer fridge is fully stocked -- across from the frozen pizzas and between the ice cream and frozen vegetable aisles -- at an Oakville Longo's location. Residents can now buy a variety of local brews and craft beers at two Longo's locations in Oakville -- 3455 Wyecroft Rd. and 469 Cornwall Rd.-- and at FreshCo at 2501 Third Line. Although the Longo's locations were among 58 authorized by the Ontario government to sell beer last December, Rosanne Longo, Longo's spokesperson, said its team took time to ensure it followed standardized practices correctly and had its staff trained properly. "That's very important to us, getting everything right across the board, from distribution to how it's going to make it convenient for our customers," Longo told the Oakville Beaver at the official launch last Friday (Feb. 5) morning at the Longo's Wyecroft Road location. Designated section Each of the Longo's allowed to sell beer has a designated refrigerated section. Staff has also been Smart Serve-certified and a number of the store's checkout lanes have been have been designated `beer lanes.' Ontario Labour Minister and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn is pictured, with Rosanne Longo, Longo's Brothers Fruit Market spokesperson watching over from behind, checking out the first purchases of beer from the Wyecroft Longo's last Friday. "And on the other 51 weekends of the year when there isn't a Super Bowl game going on, we can all appreciate the convenience of only making one stop for food and drink and Longo's is delighted to be able to offer a great range of local beers, keeping in line with our commitment to fresh and local foods." Customers want beer cold She added the stores are selling beer the way customers want to consume it -- cold. Ontario Labour Minister and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn was also on-hand to demonstrate the customer experience of purchasing a six-pack at the grocery store. He carried a six-pack of Steam Whistle, a six-pack from Cameron's Brewing Company and a bottle of Trafalgar Paddy's Irish Red Lager to a designated beer lane where he was asked to present his ID by a Smart Serve-certified cashier. Flynn commended Longo's for the work it put into training its staff and rolling out beer sales in a responsible way. "It is a new way of doing things in the Province of Ontario, but it's something people have been asking for, for an awfully long time," he said. see Local on p.15 CONCEPT LIGHTING HTING GROUP UP *TAKE 24 MO MONTHS TO O PAY do payment (no down and no interest) INJURED?
