Homs play for national title Sunday, 3 p.m. The Oakville Longhorns have forged quite a remarkable dynasty in this part of the country, winning an unprecedent ed nine straight Northern Football Conference (NFC) championships. And they're hoping to fashion a sim ilar dominance on the national level as they look to defend their national title this Sunday, October 14, 3 p.m., at Nelson Stadium in Burlington. The `Horns earned the right to defend their national title by virtue of their ninth straight NFC playoff cham pionship which they won back in midAugust, in a 36-34 thriller over Mississauga Wolverines (as recounted in the Beaver). It will mark the first time Ontario will have the privilege of hosting a senior national championship since the early fifties when senior football was a going concern in Canada, played from coast to coast. The national title game was resur rected last year with the `Horns travel ling to Winnipeg and defeating the western champion Winnipeg Senior Mustangs 42-14, after rebounding from a 14-12 deficit early in the second half. This time around, the west will field the Calgary Wolfpack as their represen tative. They are actually a fill-in for the western champion Calgary Thunder who ended up winning the western Canadian championship this year but who decided not to make the trip out east when a sponsor fell through. The reputation of the Wolfpack, however, precedes them. "They're a real, real good team," said Richard Rebiere, the `Horns vice president of football operations. In fact, prior to the `Horns, it was the Wolfpack who were the Canadian Senior Football League champions, winning the `99 title game (although eastern Canadian teams were not involved then). The `Horns play their home games out of Bronte Field in Oakville but in order to better accommodate the expect ed increase in fans, they have switched to the larger and more fan friendly Nelson Stadium. Child Find Ontario is the official charity the `Horns have designated for the title game. Child Find will hold their popular KidCheck Finger Printing and Safety Information Clinic, running from noon to 4 p.m. Parents can take a few moments to come by and have a personalized, free safety kit for each child along with obtaining a quality set of finger prints. Also in attendance will be the nationally renowned Burlington Teen Tour Band which will perform at half time with a complement of 150 musi cians. The cost of admittance is $10 adults, $7 students (with ID cards) and $5 for seniors. Children under 10 get in free. Gates will open at 1 p.m. on both sides of the stadium. Oakville Curling Club hosts junior bonspiel The Oakville Curling Club's curling program is well underway and the first invitational bonspiel takes place this weekend. Sixteen of the top ladies and men junior teams in the province will com pete for cash in the invitational spon sored by Maple Leaf Foods. Concurrently, the Optimist Open Junior/Bantam bonspiel will be held. Spectators are welcome to visit the club and watch some of Oakville's and Ontario's future Olympians participate.
