The stolen memorial monument was donated to the park as a gift by Ukrainian artist Ivan Homchar of Kiev in the 1950s. "This was a unique piece of art," said Harasym. "It's high profile in the Ukrainian com munity. It would be recognized quickly," said Ryall. Harasym said the theft could be con strued as an insult. "Shevchenko is a person who is wellrespected and revered by all in the Ukrainian community. Our community may have many arguments; but on Shevchenko, we never disagree," said Harasym. Earlier this year, as part of Canada Day celebrations, the local Ukrainian commu nity, gathered at the 16-acre Shevchenko Memorial Park at 1363 Dundas St. W. (between Third Line and Neyagawa, on the north side of Dundas Street) to cele brate the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the large Taras Shevchenko Monument there. Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko was a Ukrainian poet bom in 1814 who lived as a serf in the Ukraine under Russian Czarist control. Shevchenko was orphaned at age 11 and worked as a house boy for a group of teachers where he picked up reading. As a teen, he moved to St. Petersburg with his owner and would sneak out at night to paint. Shevchenko's art was noticed by a colony of St. Petersburg artists who sold a painting to buy Shevchenko's freedom from serfdom on April 22, 1847 and sent him to art school. A prolific painter, Shevchenko began penning poetry, but when his writings became agitational about his homeland, he was arrested in 1847 and sentenced by Czar Nicholas I to serve in the military in the far reaches of Russia. He wasn't allowed to paint or write. f, m h e r e In t h e w o r l d \ a re y o u g o in g ? m tJE'Join Sears Travelfo r our FIRST A N N U A L T RADE S H O W Sunday October 14,2001 The Trillium Banquet Hall 25 Brunei Road Mississuaga, Ontario 12:00pm to 5:00pm H ave s o m e fu n w h ile le a r n in g a b o u t s o m e fa n ta stic H ot S p o ts a n d o th e r g rea t d e s tin a tio n s w ith S ea rs Travel I I A O f l g · ^ ` T ra v el t i p s ` F a s h io n s h o w ^ · E n t e r t a i n m e n t · R e fr e s h m e n t s ·D o o r p r iz e s tf S R jK v m RSVP seating is lim ited W E G IV E Y O U T H E W O R L D ' ·Bramalea (905)458-0333 'E rin Mills (905)607-2520 ·Oakville (905)842-7211 ·Sherway (416)621-7075 ·Woodbine (416)798-3577 `Square One (905)276-6385 'See Sears Travel for details.
