Last year's St. Dominic Elementary School Grade 7 class produced a book, which contains a collection of oral history interviews the students conducted with veterans in their community. The students, who were working under the direction of history teacher John MacPhail, compiled the stories into an oral history book, planned and held a ceremony to present the book to veterans and produced a video to document the event. The presentation ceremony was held in Bronte Veteran's Park on Bronte Road and involved members of the community, including local veterans, politicians, students and their families. At the ceremony, the students also unveiled a plaque commemorating VE Day to ensure their work would have a lasting and visual impact on the community. Tomorrow (Friday) these students -- St. Dominic Elementary School Grade 7 History Class (Oakville)-- will be recognized with the Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Award during a ceremony at Queen's Park in Toronto. Each year, these awards celebrate individuals, groups and communities for exceptional contributions to conserving Ontario's cultural and natural heritage. The Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Awards are administered by the Ontario Heritage Trust, an agency of the Government of Ontario dedicated to identifying, preserving, protecting and promoting Ontario's heritage. Historical Society presents the Mertons A presentation on the Mertons will be held Wednesday, March 9 at the Palermo School House. The Trafalgar Township Historical Society event runs from 7-8 p.m. Speaker Dave Hobden will provide a historical review of the two locations within the county of Halton that have been known as Merton. The Palermo School House is located at 2431 Dundas St.W. A concert Saturday (Feb. 27) benefits the Incarnation Church Refugee Family Support Fund in support of refugees coming to Oakville. The love lives of several great composers will be celebrated in song at the Anglican Church of the Incarnation, 1240 Old Abbey Concert in support of refugee relief Rd., at 7:30 p.m. Performers include: Charlene Pauls, soprano; Norine Burgess, mezzo-soprano; tenor Mervyn Russell, and the Oakville Children's Choir.
