A public meeting will be held Tuesday (March 1) from 6-8 p.m. in the South Atrium of Town Hall. Attendees can learn what has happened to date on planning for this project, what's next, check out plans for benches and materials and provide feedback. Town council approved the Lakeshore Road Reconstruction and Streetscape Project in 2015. The two-year construction project will begin in 2019, however, the Lakeshore Bridge Rehabilitation Project is anticipated to begin in 2017. Since 2008, the Town has been aware of the need to rehabilitate Lakeshore Road East. Timing and phasing of the reconstruction is a major concern to the downtown business community as the work is expected to be disruptive for many businesses and patrons. Last November, Oakville's Planning and Development Council agreed on a 2019 start time to allow the downtown more time to recover from recent economic difficulties before reconstruction begins. The plan would see the conversion of the downtown area to a two-way street system beginning in 2016 or 2017. The phasing of the plan would see the reconstruction of Lakeshore Road, from the Lakeshore bridge to Dunn Street in the first year (2019) and from Dunn Street to Allan Street in year two (2020). The estimated cost of this project is between $200,000-$350,000. The Lakeshore Road Reconstruction and Streetscape Project was approved as part of the Downtown Transportation and Streetscape Study (DTS), which looked at the configuration and current traffic and road Top rated Tire & Auto shop by Yellow Pages conditions in the downtown. It examined ways to enhance the roadways, beautify streets, upgrade pedestrian and cycling facilities by introducing new design standards, as well as increasing connectivity, mobility and accessibility to the downtown.
