www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, March 3, 2016 | 34 Health The Royal Canadian Legion Oakville Branch (No. 114) recently donated more than $4,700 to help those living with dementia. The donation, which was made to Acclaim Health's Seniors Day Program last Thursday (Feb. 25), will be used to purchase needed specialized sleep chairs for those living with dementia who use Acclaim Health's program at Sheridan College's Trafalgar Road campus. "We want the people with dementia we support to be as comfortable at the Seniors Day Program as possible," Renita Wood, Acclaim Health director of Alzheimer Services, said in a media release. "More and more, our clients are in the later stages of the disease. It's very important for their well-being that our equipment evolves to meet these changing needs." The funds were collected from the Royal Canadian Legion's Ontario Provincial Command Branches and Ladies' Auxiliaries Charitable Foundation. "People with dementia want to live at home for as long as possible," said Steve Thomas, president of Royal Canadian Legion Oakville Branch No. 114, in the release. "And, it's Oakville's generosity during our annual Poppy Campaign that allows us to help make this happen. It's this community money that is put back into the Oakville community to assist our many veterans and seniors." Acclaim Health's Seniors Day Program supports those in the mid-to-late stages of dementia. The program's emphasis is on providing an environment where clients can be themselves, explore new activities, engage socially with others, or rest when needed to retain their abilities for as long as possible, according to Acclaim Health. Each day the program cares for 25-30 people with dementia who are living with their families. Clients can attend between one to six days per week, depending on their needs and the availability of alternate care. Last year, 111 people with dementia were cared for in the program. "Caring for a person with dementia is truly a community effort. For our clients and their families it means so much to us to have the support of the Royal Canadian Legion," added Wood.
