The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 24, 2001 - A7 Letters to the Editor OAKVILLE « o » C o u n c il & S tan d in g C o m m it t e e M Monday, November 5,2001 C o u n c il M e e tin g C o u n c il C h a m b e rs 7 :3 0 p .m . 7 :3 0 p .m . 8 4 5 -6 6 0 1 Story on smoking ban skewed The article on the smoking ban meet ing in the Oct. 21 edition of the Oakville Beaver is.not unbiased reporting of the facts. O f the many surveys conducted, only the one stating 85 per cent of Oakville residents supported a smoking ban was presented. No mention was made of the survey that showed 70 + per cent were against the ban, 20 per cent for it and six per cent who had no opinion. If there is such a strong feeling for the ban, why is it that of the 25 pre sentations from the floor, 24 were against the ban and one for? The article cites 75 per cent of Oakville restaurants are smoke-free (at the owners' choice), then it should be the owners' choice to allow smoking. Surely there area enough smoke-free facilities to meet all of the desires of non-smokers without forcing their will on premises that allow smoking. A nonsmoker is not forced to attend a place where limited smoking is permitted. Can the charities supported by bingo and restaurant licensing fees - nearly a quarter o f a million dollars - survive without these fees? Who suffers? The recipients. Your statement o f `Profit pitted against public health' is misleading - the profit goes to charities not the propri etors and I don't need "big brother" to dictate my health or protect the health of mon-smokers who do not have to attend establishments where smoking is per mitted. If council brings in and enforces the 100 per cent ban (against democratic principles) I shall salute them by raising my right arm, shouting "Sieg heil" as I head out the door for a meal in Hamilton or Mississauga. eetings Monday, November 12,2001 P la n n in g & D e v e lo p m e n t C o uncil C o u n c il C h a m b e rs Tuesday, November 13, 2001 Com m unity S ervices C om m ittee 7 :30 p.m . - O akville R oom Adm inistrative Services C om m . 7 :30 p.m . - Trafalg ar Room Monday, November 19, 2001 C o u n c il M e e tin g C o u n c il C h a m b e rs 7 :3 0 p .m . Tom Sawyer A lesson in how not to drive safely If you see a sm all piece o f y o u r se lf w hen d riv in g a vehicle after reading about this incident, please, fo r the sake o f new d riv ers and ped estrian s, change those habits. O n T hurs. Oct. 18, m y son was d riving to school via o u r n e ig h bourhood, C oro n atio n Park. As he is a level G1 d riv er on the g rad u at ed licensing p rocess, he m ust drive w ith a licen sed driver, during d ay lig h t hours and not on a highw ay. As we stopped at a stop sign on H ixon S treet, a lig h t gold colo u red van pulled up quickly behind us. As my son cau tio u sly looked both w ays before p ulling out, the w om en in the van started g iving him hand signals to hurry up. He turned the corner and w ithin a co u p le hundred yards cam e to an o th er stop sign. I have to think the w om an in the gold coloured van assum ed he w as not actually going to stop at the sign because she w as alm ost kissin g our rear bum per. As my son is still honing the skill o f riding the clutch and gas so that the car does not roll back, he becam e a little concerned due to h er clo se proxim ity. He tu rn ed to ex p ress his concern to me at w hich tim e she started on the horn w ith accom panying hand sig nals. He started o ff fine and m ade the rig h t hand turn. A t this point the w om an also m ade the turn w ith o ut stopping at the stop sign, sped up quickly behind us, then decided to actu ally speed by and pass us on a neig h b o u rh o o d street. A t 8:45 in th e m o rn in g th e re are u su ally n um erous ch ild ren w alking and rid ing on the road as w ell as school buses stopping to pick up w aiting ch ild ren . I w as in shock at this driv in g behaviour. D ue to h er speed it is w ith reg ret that I w as unable to get her licen ce num ber. To those heavy fo o ted d rivers, I am quite aw are after being the passenger for a new d river fo r a few m onths, how p a in fu lly slow 40km an ho u r appears to be. T his is how ever the speed lim it on our streets. The stop signs are also there fo r a reason and should be respected. I have never been m ore aw are o f how m any bad and in co n siderate drivers there are on o u r streets. It is becom ing in creasin g ly easy to fin d exam ples o f how I do not w ant my son to drive. So please, if you find you drive in a hurry on a reg u lar basis then w ould it not m ake m ore sense to leave 5 or 10 m inutes e arlie r than je o p a rd iz e all o f our lives. To the w om an in the gold co loured van, if you d o n 't know how to drive a standard vehicle I w ould love the opportunity to let you drive m ine and hope th at som e one stops w ithin 2 inches o f your rear bum per and see your reaction.
