T Some of the value-for-dollar cruises I like are with Sunquest Vacations, sailing W © the Caribbean aboard MS SunDream and MS SunBird. I've seen prices advertised as low as $648, and that includes air, cruise and meals, but not port taxes and shore excur sions. This year, Sunquest is McTavish Travel i n f o r m a t i o n s e r v i c e NOTHING TOPS A HOLIDAY SALE There's nothing like a sale to get things going -- and Air Canada Vacations is having a dandy. Naturally, you'll be flying Air Canada and there are even bar gains when you're in the air - like the chance of upgrading to a wide seat for just $149, round-trip. That's just for openers. McTavish will happily fill you in on all the bargains. We can, for example save you $1220 a couple when you book super-inclusive SuperClubs Breezes Runaway Bay in Jamaica between now and April. Breezes Runaway Bay has won many culinary awards, and no wonder, the buffets are long and lavish, and the Italian Restaurant, Martino's, has a constantly changing menu. Or how about flying just three hours from Toronto to try the ultra all-inclusive Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort & Spa in Nassau? It may be their most impressive property yet. They even have an island with its own cafe and a swim-up pool bar, the perfect romantic getaway for lovers of all ages. If you visit from November 22 to December 16, you can save $2640 a couple. You say you'd like to take the kids away over the holidays. Fine, Air Canada Vacations has negotiated a " Kids Stay Free" package over Christmas and New Year's at the Allegro Bavaro, in Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic. This all-inclusive property is on a beautiful beach, has 9 restaurants, a kid's club and lots of entertainment and activities. Or how about visiting lush St. Lucia, where the all-inclusive Club St. Lucia by Splash, a lively family resort, has an inno vative kid's program, and kids stay and eat free? That's just a sample. In Havana, we walked off the ship, and in five minutes had walked down town, where we spent 13 hours exploring the wonderful colo nial city. When our feet gave out, we hired a horse and buggy, and stopped often for drinks in the charming out door cafes. This year, I'd be very tempted by the 14-night American Dream. It hits some new ports like Tampa and Key West, Freeport and Nassau in the Bahamas and Cap Haitien, in Haiti. That's where the wreck of Columbus Santa Maria lies just off the coast. Some people like to choose a shore excursion every day, others prefer to explore on their own. It's sim ple to do. Just get a good guidebook and decide just what you want to see. Check to see if it is safe before you go wandering around on your own, and check to see if there is local bus service and if it is reliable. When you're deciding on a cruise, think about how much time you spend in your cabin. I've stayed in the several in side cabins and they were fine. No, I didn't suffer from claustrophobia, a little to my surprise. The only thing I noticed was that you had to go on deck to check the weather, not a big deal because the weather was just about always lovely. On another cruise with Sunquest, we had a suite, more room of course, and I did enjoy the bathtub. The higher the deck you are on, the less walking you have to do, which may be a consideration. And safety has never been an issue on cruise ships; secu rity is tight, in fact each pas senger must go through secu rity every time they get on or off, and all luggage is Xrayed. Happy sailing!
