www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, March 25, 2016 | 12 People are not at risk, says CLO continued from p.8 "Vocational programs like that are (run on a) fairly cost-efficient model, but we're talking about the quality of people's life and the meaningfulness of their days. If something costs more, it costs more and we need to work that out and work with the ministry to do that." She said changes won't happen overnight -- it will be a gradual process. "We really try to reassure families, people are not at risk. We're not prepared to take something away until something as good or better is developed," Lorimer said. She added, she understands the Ministry's desire to move away from sheltered workshops, but is also sympathetic to the families who are concerned about the well-being of their loved ones. "Change can be very positive and bring new opportunities that hopefully everybody will look back down the road and think this is so much better really," she said. Harber, who has scheduled to meet with CLO to discuss a future plan for her brother, said she's not opposed to inclusion, We really try to reassure families, people are not at risk. "It's (employment) not for all of them. They're all different. They have different capabilities," she said, reiterating how great the environment is at Speers Place Industries, and how happy her brother is to be doing something productive in a safe and secure setting. The job gives him purpose, a sense of accomplishment and has opened doors to other opportunities like playing in a band, getting involved in the Special Olympics and more, Harber added. She said she's read a lot about what the plan for those taking part in sheltered workshops might look like, including offering volunteer opportunities and other day programs, but to her, that's just an hour out of a day and not the routine her brother has. "It's a nice, safe place. They're happy. Isn't that what we want?" The ministry is currently facilitating a series on engagement sessions for service providers this month and April on the best practices and lessons learned by agencies that have successfully made the transition away from sheltered workshops. The Ministry of Labour is also reviewing relevant legislation through the Changing Workplaces Review and will engage with stakeholders from the developmental disabilities community on the issue because the exemption of sheltered workshops falls under the Employment Standards Act. "This is a complex issue with strong views on all sides, but we are determined to get it right, so that people with developmental disabilities have every opportunity for dignity, choice and inclusion," said Henry.
