The Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) member qualified for a second Olympic event on the final day of the Canadian swim trials last Sunday. The 24-year-old Bouchard finished second in the women's 200-metre backstroke. Hilary Caldwell took first with a Canadian record time of two minutes, 7.96 seconds followed by Bouchard in 2:08.52. That easily met the Olympic qualifying standard of 2:10.60. Four swimmers met the standard in a competitive field, but only the top two will compete in Brazil. OAK teammate Rosie Zavaros, 16, also made the final. She finished eighth in 2:12.15. OAK's Mack Darragh earned his second victory of the meet. Having already won the 200m butterfly, the 22-year-old took first in the 100m butterfly with a personal best time of 53.37 seconds that was one second off the Olympic qualifying time. There were three Oakville swimmers in the final, with Gamal Assaad finishing eighth and Zack Chetrat 10th. Though Darragh didn't qualify for the Olympics, he was named to the Canadian team for the world short-course championships in Windsor in December. He'll be joined on the Canadian team by Evan White, who finished second in the men's 200m individual medley. He finished in a time of 2:01.53 to edge Darragh for the silver medal. Oakville's Tera Van Beilen was third in the women's 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:07.89. She was also sixth in the 200m breaststroke. Tessa Cieplucha made the final in the women's 800m freestyle, finishing fifth. She also made the B final, finishing 13th, in the women's 200m freestyle. Cieplucha was named to the Canadian team for the Junior Pan Pacific Championships. Joining her on that team will be OAK's Matthew Mac, who was seventh in the 200m backstroke at trials, Mabel Zavaros, who was 15th in the women's 200m backstroke, and Rosie Zavaros. T h e g a t h e r i n g Late goal gives Hornets silver at girls' atom AA provincials The Oakville atom AA Hornets followed up their Lower Lakes Female Hockey League championship with a bronze medal at provincials. The Hornets scored with two minutes to play to edge the Barrie Sharks 3-2 in the Ontario Women's Hockey Association bronzemedal game Sunday. Oakville posted three consecutive shutouts in round-robin play, blanking the Ottawa Ice 2-0, the Whitby Wolves 6-0 and Barrie 1-0. The Hornets finally yielded their first goal of the tournament in the quarter-finals but held off the Burlington Barracudas for a 4-3 victory. In the semifinals, the Clarington Flames topped the Hornets 2-1, denying Oakville a rematch of the Lower Lakes final with Aurora, which went on to claim gold with a 1-0 win over the Flames. Meanwhile, the Hornets earned its second win of the tournament over Barrie to claim the bronze. The team consists of (from left) David Haigh, David Hope, Michael Maurice and Donald Goddard. | photo submitted `Congenial' Oakville curlers win division at bonspiel in Scotland A visiting foursome from Oakville demonstrated curling skill and congeniality during a recent trip to Scotland. The Oakville Curling Club team of David Haigh, David Hope, Michael Maurice and Donald Goddard made the trek to participate in The Gathering, a three-day bonspiel held annually each March at the Murrayfield Curling Rink in Edinburgh. Half of the 28 teams were from the host country, with others coming from Switzerland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark, along with Oakville and one other team from the Windsor, Ont. area. The Oakville foursome was attending for the fourth time, winning division titles three times. The Oakville curlers don't play as a foursome at the OCC, but get together for The Gathering and stay at a hotel five minutes from the rink. Two of the curlers were accompanied by their wives. The team lost three seeding games (two to Scottish teams and another to Switzerland) and the results, along with points produced in the games, put the Canadians in the D/E division. Oakville won the division with victories over Norway and two more host teams. At the award ceremonies, the Oakville foursome was awarded prizes and a glass trophy for the division win, but also took home the Friendship Quaich, which goes to the most congenial team of the bonspiel. "Next year," said Maurice. "we shall have it with us on our return to fill with whisky and pass it around the table after each game." Participants keep in touch throughout the year and look forward to the event each spring.
