Teacher hopes to raise funds to run week-long STEM camps for girls continued from p.5 high school level and definitely don't pursue it in post-secondary school," said Anthony. "In my experience as a teacher, more can be done at the level of early education, specifically in primary and secondary schools, to explicitly support and inspire girls in STEM." Launching GENEius Science in 2015 has been a six-year project in the making, which is how long Anthony's has been a teacher. The group founder started her career teaching a Grade 12 university-level biology course that included molecular genetics and biochemistry. The former "really captivated and fascinated me." "Having witnessed first-hand how excited students get and how engaged they get when they're learning science concepts that are personally relevant to them is really amazing," said Anthony. "Biotechnology, especially the genetics component of it, is an interdisciplinary field by nature and it reaches all areas of science, technology, engineering and math to study and innovate with living organisms and DNA." To finance its GENEius Girls program, the Oakville group has set up an online fundraising campaign, looking to reach its $20,000 goal by Thursday, March 10. To date, it has accumulated more than $3,000. The funds will be used to offer free biotechnology education and provide access to state-of-theart STEM equipment, such as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machine, electrophoresis and other lab instruments. If the target is reached, the money will fund a free test session of the program -- a five-day GENEius Girls March Break Camp in Toronto to provide workshops for 20-30 girls. A scaled-down version for a small group of students will happen if the objective isn't met. "In the future, I would like to run the program all over the place... so holding camps in Oakville and across the GTA is what I set my sights on. We have to start off small," said Anthony. "When you think of scientists, you have that Albert Einstein archetype in your head. We want to change that, so when girls think of these careers, they see themselves, they see women and they see diversity."
