People invited to Feed the Beast with Crime Stoppers shredding by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 27 | Thursday, April 21, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton Crime Stoppers is inviting Oakville residents to `Feed the Beast' and protect themselves from identity theft by taking advantage of a special shredding event on Saturday, May 7. The crime prevention charity will be hosting the giant mobile shredding machine, known as `The Beast' from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Halton Region facility at 1151 Bronte Rd. During that time residents can safely dispose of their unwanted personal papers and documents. The owners of the truck, FileBank Canada, one of the country's leading onsite document shredding and destruction companies, has partnered with Halton Crime Stoppers to guarantee any personal and sensitive material fed to the beast can never be used to steal someone's identity. Fast-growing crime "Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in Canada and people can easily be victimized," said Det. Const. Paul Proteau, Halton Crime Stoppers co-ordinator. "It's vital for everyone to make sure their personal papers, mail or other documents don't fall into the wrong hands," advised the Crime Stoppers co-ordinator. Proteau said fraud artists need only a few pieces of information to steal someone's identity and open up false accounts in that person's name. There is a fee $5 for the destruction of a shopping bag worth of documents, $10 for a banker's box and $15 for a large box with all proceeds going to support Halton Crime Stoppers in its efforts to combat crime and keep the region safe for all residents. FileBank Canada, headquartered in Toronto, has conducted successful shredding events with Halton Crime Stoppers in previous years and also with other Crime Stoppers organizations. Proteau said the shredding event is also timed to coincide with the end of the tax season when people need to dispose of old records and discard any papers with account numbers or other sensitive information that are no longer required. "This is the perfect opportunity to look around and get rid of any papers that should be shredded to prevent you from becoming a victim of identity theft," he said.
