Joan died peacefully at home Monday, April 18, 2016 surrounded by her family. Joan was born and raised in Halifax, met and married Ted in 1963. Being a RCAF pilot's wife meant several moves in the early years finally settling in south-east Burlington in 1968. Joan leaves behind her husband Ted after nearly 53 years of marriage. She also leaves son Christopher of Dundas; daughter Cynthia (Murdo Gordon) of Skillman, NJ; son Brian (Laurie) of Tahoe City, CA plus her precious grandchildren: Cailie, Adam, and Kayl. She was predeceased by her parents Lawrence and Edna Bastie of Halifax, NS. Also predeceased by older brother Laurie Bastie (killed in an RCAF operational flying accident in 1969). Joan is also survived by sister-in-law Patti Bastie (Laurie's widow); brother Paul (Mavis) of Lethbridge, AB and sister Paula (John Beed) of Halifax NS. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins. Joan was a stay-at-home mom - her family was her pride and joy - the centre of her universe. After the kids had all left home, Joan took up ballroom dancing with a passion. She excelled at her hobby earning many amateur awards at dance competitions over the past 24 years. She is also leaving behind many friends from her ballroom dance circle. The dancing kept her young and invigorated - her last dance lesson activity was January 12, 2016. (The photo accompanying this notice was taken March 2013 - more than 2 years after her diagnosis and displays Joan's positive attitude.) Joan was first diagnosed with stage IV metastatic colon cancer in January 2011. At that time she was given 14 months to live, but with chemo-therapy and gritty determination she stretched that to over 5 years. The family wishes to thank Dr. Rosemary Van Straalen and Dr. Bruce Gay of Oakville for their initial diagnosis and followup treatment over the years. Also we wish to thank Dr. Kevin Zbuk plus the cancer clinic team at Juravinski Cancer Centre for their compassionate chemo treatments that enabled Joan to beat the odds and enjoy nearly 5 more years of quality life. Cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Interment is planned for Burlington Memorial Gardens, Guelph Line, Burlington, Ontario. COOKE, Geoffrey Albert March 12, 1935 - April 16, 2016 With immeasurable sadness we share the news that, after facing many challenging health issues over the past year, Geoffrey passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family. Geoff will be deeply missed by Sayre, his wonderful wife of almost 58 years; his children, Andrew, John, Sallie and Adam, ten precious grandchildren; Aidan, Amelia, Jeffrey, Alexandra, Elyssa, Isabelle, Oliver, Aidan, Grayson and Abbott. Son and daughters in laws; Christopher, Julie, Carrie and Mary anne. Lovingly remembered by his sister Christine and sister and brothers-in-laws Sue, Bob, David and Christopher and many nephews and nieces and well as by the Cook's; Ted, Betty, Liz and Charles and their families. Geoffrey was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England. His love of cricket started early in his days at Worksop College, and continued throughout his life with many later visits to the Oval. His strong work ethic and drive for a career started early with his accounting studies and he obtained his Chartered Accountancy designation in England in 1957. At that same time he fell in love with Sayre Gilbert, an American girl, when they met as next door neighbours in Doncaster. This relationship prompted a new life in Canada together. Geoff emigrated to Canada in 1958 with Sayre following nine months later. He started his career with Alcan in Montreal and quickly moved to their auditors McDonald Currie & Co. where Geoff was admitted as a partner in 1969. McDonald Currie & Co was renamed Coopers & Lybrand, where Geoff stayed a devoted audit partner for the rest of his career, retiring in 1995. Geoff moved his family and career to Toronto, settling in the beautiful town of Oakville in 1972. After winning a long battle with cancer with fierce determination in 1978, his passion for sailing was ignited. With equally fierce determination, despite the fact he couldn't swim, he learnt to sail and spent over 40 years enjoying sailing and racing his beloved `Windsage' with family and friends, first at the Oakville Harbor Yacht Club, and later at the Oakville Yacht Squadron, where he served as Commodore. The last 15 years of Geoff's life were spent travelling with Sayre between Oakville, Toronto, Calgary, Washington D.C. and England visiting with the ten grandchildren he was so proud of. A private, loyal and exacting individual, Geoff was always humble. His education, his family and most of all his `life experiences' molded his strong values and character. All of this resulted in many wonderful qualities: intelligence, determination, respect of others, politeness and honesty - a challenging but true gentleman. He admired people for being themselves, knowing their stuff and straight talking and believed that hard work could get you anywhere. He was blessed to see his wife Sayre and her `smile' turn eighty last December surrounded by loved ones and see the first daffodils from his beloved garden this Spring before he died. The family invites friends to celebrate Geoffrey's life at 10:00 a.m. on Friday April 29th at Maple Grove United Church, 346 Maple Grove Drive Oakville Ontario L6J 4V5 and afterwards for lunch at the Mississauga Golf & Country Club, 1725 Mississauga Road Mississauga, Ontario L5H 2K4. After serving with the Royal Canadian Artillery as a Limber Gunner in World War 2, John was an optometrist in Oakville for almost 40 years. For funeral details please go to www.glenoaks.ca In Loving Memory of Jane Elizabeth BRAMMAR Jane passed away peacefully April 9, 2016, at home surrounded by her family Tanja Loeb, Craig Walker, Terry Houston, Manja Dixon, her cherished nephews Zacheriah, Maxx, and Noah Houston, and her two dogs Zoey and Theo. Jane also had an extended and treasured family of friends, many of whom remained beside her through to her last hours. The list is long of those who loved Jane ferociously and who regularly gave in to her insatiable requests for romance novels, double doubles, and new shoes. Though Jane was not born in to our family, we could hardly remember when she wasn't a part of it. She had a quiet and profound impact on our daily lives and we were all uplifted by our mutual acceptance of and reliance on each other. Jane being differentlyabled only meant we had to be more creative, more understanding, more thoughtful, and more patient, as did she. Ultimately, all of our lives just had more love. Life was no more difficult with Jane than for any other family who struggles with the day-to-day. What will be difficult is living without her. Jane is also survived by her sister-in-law Barbara, her nephews Steven and Blake, and cousins. Jane is pre-deceased by her parents Austin and Mavis and brother Paul.
