Defending champ Blue Devils lose League 1 Ontario opener A shorthanded Oakville Blue Devils team couldn't provide a winning effort for the 500 fans who attended the defending League 1 Ontario champions' home opener on Sunday. The Blue Devils dropped a 1-0 match to FC London at Sheridan College Stadium Before the game, the Blue Devils were presented with Ontario and Inter Provincial championship trophies in honour of their memorable 2015 season. Several of this season's players weren't available because of injuries or university team commitments. It gave some of the new arrivals and younger Blue Devils a chance to display their talents. The closest Oakville came to scoring was in the 29th minute when Filipe Vilela, the league MVP who led all scorers last year, hit the post. After a scoreless first half, London broke the deadlock on a Petar Karan goal in the 57th minute, connecting on a hard shot from the edge of the penalty area. Blue Devils goalkeeper Scott Shewfelt was red carded and ejected in the 77th minute for a challenge outside the penalty area. "We did not perform as well as we have done in our pre-season buildup," Duncan Wilde, Oakville's head coach, said. "I felt we deserved something from the game as it was a very evenly-balanced contest. Goals win games and we need to work hard in training in that area." The Blue Devils travel to Windsor on Saturday, May 7 for a 4 p.m. kickoff against the Stars.
