Wednesday, February 9, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Private high school limits class size to 12 Chisholm Centre held its ground breaking ceremony to celebrate the start of its new 15,000 square foot facility. The school focuses on students who would benefit from small classes and individualized instruc tion at the high school level. Dr. Howard Bernstein, the Executive Director spoke to students with excitement in a warm and gentle manner as he commented on their "new home". The Chisholm Academy is part of Chisholm Centre, which began in 1971. The Centre com pletes educa tional and psychological evaluations; personal and vocational counselling; provides tutorial support; and offers high school courses for credit, on an individual basis. The new facility, to be com pleted by September 2000 , is designed by archi tect, Neil McDonald and the project manager is Dave Ledderer of Glen Oak Homes. The building will include improved testing, teaching and consultation areas, as well as new class room s, science, art and computer labs and a gym nasium. Glenbumie School, a private co-educational day school offering Preschool to Grade 8, is located in east Oakville. Low pupil-teacher ratios allow for individualized instruction, appropriate to the needs of each student. At Glenbumie, focus is placed on excellence, task commitment and skill development in a supportive atmosphere where students are encouraged and expected to achieve at their personal best. Glenbumie's progressive, challenging programme offers skill development in Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science and Technology, in an enriched environment. The Information Technology Programme utilizes two fully equipped computer labs, as well as computers and colour printers in every classroom. Non-traditional programmes such as Economics, Time Management, CORT Thinking, and Gifted Education are integrated into the curriculum to fully prepare each student for the future. Studies also include Physical Education, Varsity and Intramural Sports, and an enriched Arts Programme including Music, Fine Arts, and Drama. Music pedagogy includes advanced vocal techniques and instrumental instruction. Parents of a child joining Glenbumie at the Grades 6/7/8 levels, will appreciate the school's commitment to pro viding a consolidation of their child's reading, writing and mathematical skills. Invaluable life skills such as time management, critical thinking, research and study skills are also essential components of each student's course of study.
