Canadian Diabetes Association urges smokers to quit on World No Tobacco Day In recognition of World No Tobacco Day on Tuesday (May 31), the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) is urging Canadians who smoke to quit to improve their overall health. According to the CDA's Report on Diabetes -- Driving Change -- not only is smoking dangerous when living with diabetes, recent studies suggest that smoking is an independent risk factor for type 2 diabetes and those who smoke 25 or more cigarettes daily have double the diabetes risk of non-smokers, according to a media release. "People with diabetes who use tobacco face greater health risks. Smoking can contribute to hardening of the arteries, which when combined with high blood sugar levels can accelerate the development of diabetes complications," Dr. Jan Hux, chief science officer at the CDA, said in the release. "A person living with diabetes who smokes faces three times the risk for heart attack over someone who does not." Rick Blickstead, CDA president and CEO, said on World No Tobacco Day, the CDA is encouraging Canadians to take charge of their health. "Quitting smoking is one of the most important things Canadians can do to live that helps 11 million Canadians with diabetes or prediabetes live healthy lives, and educates those at risk. CDA offerings across Canada In communities across Canada, the CDA: · offers educational programs and support services; · develops resources for health-care professionals on best practices to care for people with diabetes; · advocates with those affected by diabetes to governments, schools and workplaces; · funds research to improve treatments and find a cure. More information on the CDA is available online at diabetes.ca or by phone at 1-800-BANTING (226-8464). 35 | Thursday, May 26, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com well," he said in the release. "It can be overwhelming and may take multiple attempts, but with support and determination, it can be done. "No matter how long you have smoked, your health will improve after quitting," he added. Making the decision to quit smoking is a big first step, according to the CDA. Those who stop smoking often start again because of the withdrawal symptoms, such as stress and weight gain. Getting support Individuals can get the support needed through a smoking cessation program, health-care providers or other resources in the community.
