Known for its enormous size -- reaching up to 14 feet, in some cases -- the plant not only poses a threat to native plants and biodiversity, but also produces a noxious sap that sensitizes the skin to ultraviolet light. This can result in severe and painful burning Outdoor@Home All Regular Stock 2016 Spring Fling! With that in mind, CH urges anyone attempting to remove giant hogweed on their own to wear proper protective clothing, including waterproof fabric with long sleeves, rubber boots, gloves and face and eye protection. If you have a small patch of the plant, you can dig the plants up, but be sure the entire root is removed, and then check the area again in two weeks for any re-growth. A larger infestation requires other control methods, which should be conducted by a certified professional. Even if you removed giant hogweed last year, there may be seedlings sprouting that will need to be removed. Giant hogweed has several lookalikes, including a smaller, harmless plant which has a similar (but much smaller) white flower called Queen Anne's lace. If you're unsure whether or not you have giant hogweed, contact Brenda Van Ryswyk of CH at 905-336-1158, ext. 2282, or brendab@ hrca.on.ca.
