Students earn top honours in science in Montreal by Tim Whitnell Metroland West Media 19 | Thursday, June 2, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Seven Oakville and Burlington residents were among a dozen Bay Area pupils, who won top awards at the recent Canada-Wide Science Fair. Sixteen area students competed against almost 500 of the best pupils from across Canada at the national fair, held May 14-21 in Montreal. The local students had their trip to Quebec paid for by the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair based on their performances at this year's BASEF competition. BASEF is the regional science fair held annually in Hamilton for Grades 7-12 students from Hamilton, Halton Region, Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant Counties, and Six Nations. BASEF's Canada-Wide Science Fair competitors brought home 15 awards: four gold medals; six silvers; two bronzes; two Challenge Awards; and one Special Award. The Bay Area tied with Calgary for the most medal-winning projects. Alexander Waldie M.M. Robinson Grade 11 student Caroline Mahut, a regular participant in high-level science and engineering competitions, was the only gold medal winner for Burlington and Halton Region at this year's nationals. She won gold, and a special Challenge Award, for having the top senior innovation project for her work titled Slowing Down To Power Your Town. A silver medal and Special Award, David Vidican the Australian National Youth Science Forum Award, went to Jack Mogus, in Grade 10 at Garth Webb Secondary School in Oakville. His project is Graphene Reinforced Guayule Rubber ­ Conductive Hypoallergenic Super Nanocomposite. Oakville's Katie Brent, in Grade 12 at Notre Dame Secondary School in Burlington, received a silver medal for her project At A Measured Step: An Orthopaedic Jack Mogus Pressure-Based Rehabilitative Insole. Michael Wolfe, in Grade 8 at Trinity Christian School in Burlington, won silver for his project Wi-Tricity on Wheels: Solar/ Hydro Wireless Charging of Electric Vehicles. Paul Drakos of Oakville, in Grade 8 at Hillfield-Strathallan College in Hamilton, won silver for his project A Prototype Water Coil for Generating Electricity.
