Local author launches debut novel today An Oakville author is launching her debut novel today (Thursday). Hannah McKinnon describes her book Time After Time as the love child of the films Groundhog Day and Sliding Doors. The novel tells the story of romantic paths that could have been, following the main protagonist Hayley Cooper, a powerful but now struggling lawyer, who fantasizes about what her life would be like if only if she'd made different choices. "It's understandable -- the past two years have been hell. She barely sees her kids, her boss is trying to sabotage her, and her marriage is falling apart," stated a media release. "Burnt out, Hayley goes to sleep wishing for a different life. When she wakes up married to her first boyfriend, one she has not seen in more than 20 years, she realizes there might be some truth in the saying `be careful what you wish for.'" Launch party Friday A launch party is set for tomorrow (Friday) at the Lakeshore Coffee House, 2007 Lakeshore Rd., in Burlington from 4-6:30 p.m. McKinnon was born in the U.K. and grew up in Switzerland. Residents will be able to bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the British comedy What We Did On Our Holiday under the stars at the Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate, 8 Navy St. The film, rated PG-13, tells the story of Doug and Abi who take their kids on a family vacation. Surrounded by relatives, the kids innocently reveal the ins and outs of their family life and many intimate details about their parents. Written and directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, the movie stars Rosamund Pike, David Tennant and Billy Connolly. The film will be screened at dusk, approximately 9 p.m. There is also a rain date on Saturday (June 4). Organizers advise those who want to attend to arrive early and claim a spot, as space is limited. Later this month (June 24-26), the cultural non-profit OFFA is putting on its third annual Willson Oakville Film Festival, which will feature 18 Canadian and international films and documentaries. Former dancer with the Oakville Academy for the Arts Melissa Panetta is headed to Chicago to work for the professional dance company Thodos Dance Chicago. The 23-year-old started dancing at age five in a variety of styles, including ballet, jazz, tap, and contemporary. She began training at the Oakville Academy for the Arts when it first opened its doors in 2003 up until her graduation in 2012. Panetta credits the Oakville dance school with helping her develop into the artist she is today. From there, she moved to Vancouver, B.C., where she continued to pursue her passion for dance at the Simon Fraser University. She recently graduated from there with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Dance major and minoring in Kinesiology.
