How do you Pizzelle? or Shoulda Been AWAKE: ask Sheridan by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver 9 | Thursday, June 9, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com What began as a class project for Sheridan College students turned out to be a realworld learning experience. The third-year advertising and marketing communications students at Sheridan Oakville recently produced two commercials for AWAKE Chocolate and Reko Pizzelle Cookies as part of their Advanced Creative Development course. With assistance from Advertising Creative Professor Iryna Molodecky, 56 students, 28 per class, gained hands-on experience making commercials with the two clients and the school's production house. Benchmark for going forward "It was an amazing solution that is now our benchmark for going forward. It was a solution for a situation we had, that we needed to give something to our students, but it was always something we were looking to do anyway," Molodecky. "It was a really awesome opportunity that ended up being a real great experience for everyone including the students and the clients. They were very happy with the whole process and the products." The aim of the project was to provide experience in a realistic simulation of the "complex working relationships and commercial was to film 100 students in a lecture hall for the party scene, which was the most challenging aspect, Molodecky said. But due to a snowstorm in March that closed Sheridan for the day, the shoot was rescheduled a week later, in the midst of exams, which reduced the number of students participating to 50. Students learn `real-life stuff' "This is real-life stuff that our students were learning. We had 100 students lined up. We had done so much work to set it up," said Molodecky. "The production team did an awesome job of making it look like there were a lot more students than there were." Working with Sheridan Production House (SPH) and Prionnsias Murphy, SPH manager, the project took eight weeks to complete -- from concepts to final product. Each class was assigned a client and divided into seven agency groups with a brand name and logo. The clients briefed the group of students and then each agency team developed multiple concept storyboard options for its commercial. "We knew we had our Sheridan Production House available to us, which is really comprised of graduates in the media arts program. They're familiar with this type of project, see Sheridan on p.17 The AWAKE Chocolate ad created by advertising students at Sheridan College is racking up views on YouTube. | YouTube processes involved in advertising creative development and the production industry," Molodecky said. "The TV commercial has been part of the third-year course for a long time. It's added value for our students who go on to third year because the advertising program is a two-year diploma course, as well as a three-year," said Molodecky.
