www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 10, 2016 | 14 Community spirit a key ingredient to the town continued from p.5 things to doing much more complex and involved projects. It's not something a person can do on their own," said Munz. "You really need to have a group of dedicated people to move forward and make things happen." The Individual Volunteer Award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding volunteer contribution towards improving the well-being of Oakville residents of any age group. Sponsored by Paradiso Restaurant, James Montague took home the award for his roles as the lead marshal for the Santa Claus Parade, organizer of the Special Olympics bowling fundraisers, event planner for the annual All Star Awards Gala, as well as for being an active Rotary Club of Oakville West (RCOW) member. Montague said he's happy to be part of "such a great Oakville community," with the support of organizations such as Community Living Oakville, STRIDE (Supported Training & Rehabilitation in Diverse Environments) and Halton police, to name a few. "Winning the award was something I wasn't expecting. It means a lot. To do so much in the community and give awards to people with developmental disabilities and support Special Olympics is a great passion to me," said Montague. The Oakville Beaver-sponsored Arts Award recognizes an individual or organization that, through volunteerism, has contributed to nurturing and enhancing the arts in town. Dawne Rudman, who helps run Oakville's World of Threads Festival, was given the award for her work as a fibre artist and exhibition curator. Since 1998, Rudman has helped prepare exhibitions that showcases traditional and contemporary fibre artwork and has contributed thousands of volunteer hours. "If there weren't volunteers, nothing would happen," she said, particularly when it comes to running the threads festival. "If there weren't people who would volunteer, we wouldn't have a festival. I put in thousands of hours, but I love it. I love what I do. It's well worth it," said Rudman. The Youth Award, sponsored by RBC, was handed out to 18-year-old Matteo Esposito, who volunteers at West End Studio and Oakville Centre for Performing Arts. With a passion for theatre, Esposito, a Community Living Oakville client, was instrumental in creating the Take Flight Theatre Group to help those with developmental disabilities participate in theatrical performances at various local establishments. The Town of Oakville-sponsored Senior Award went to Fred Drews for contributing more than 3,000 hours as a volunteer at the Oakville hospital, where he's worked in patient transport since 2010. Drews spends two days a week, working double shifts, with a team that moves patients throughout the facility. Nicky Lawson, a dedicated volunteer with the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides for more than eight years, was given the Access Abilities-sponsored Access Award. She's been instrumental in fostering and grooming puppies into competent and wellmatched guide dogs. Lawson is also the Halton K9 Lions Club fundraising chair, helping to increase available program funds to $40,000. halton.ca 311 Presentation on accessibility improvements to Burloak Regional Waterfront Park and Spencer Smith Park June 23, 2016 A presentation will take place at the next meeting of Halton's Accessibility Advisory Committee on Halton Region's plans for accessibility improvements to Spencer Smith Park in Burlington and the Burloak Regional Waterfront Park (located on the border of Oakville and Burlington).
