Relay funds research needed to find cure for cancer continued from p.1 "Relay for Life embodies those that have been touched by cancer," said Farano. "It's an opportunity for us to remember those who have lost that fight.... It's important to participate and support events like this -- it's communitydriven and an opportunity for us... to continue that fight." This year's event is at a new venue -- Coronation Park at 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W. -- that spot, Farano says, was selected because it's a public place very familiar to residents. It also has a new format. No longer is it a 12hour overnight relay, but rather, this year's event runs 7 p.m.-1 a.m. Farano said organizers realized the overnight commitment is a lot to ask of participants. "... And because of the time of year, it being Father's Day weekend, we thought by reducing the number of hours we're committing, it hopefully will increase participation." Last year's Relay saw 350 people raise $170,000 towards a cancer research grant. Farano said it's hoped the same or more will be raised this year, and approximately 300 people are so far expected to participate. Once again, funds raised will support research grants and the work of CCS. New to this year's relay will be Survivorthemed games, team challenges for prizes based on the popular reality TV show. There will also be music, yoga, a live choir and marching band, and kickboxing, as well as the traditional luminary ceremony honouring those who have died from cancer or are fighting the disease. A Survivors' Lap will once again take place as cancer survivors take to the track in celebration of beating the disease. "The night is a bit of an emotional roller coaster," said Farano, "so, I think the entertainment part helps keep people active and engaged." Luminaries can be purchased for $5 at the event or online at www.relayforlife.ca/oakville. 3 | Thursday, June 16, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The word hope, of which Relay for Life is symbolic, is illuminated during a previous year's relay event. | Oakville Beaver file photo Vince Farano | submitted photo The Relay culminates with a Fight-Back Ceremony, in which participants pledge to fight back against cancer in their own lives throughout the year. Farano, a former assistant manager at Glen Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery, has for two years put together a team for the Oakville Relay -- it has raised approximately $10,000, collectively. "We look at it as an opportunity to give back to the community," said Farano, who is now managing funeral director of the Brampton Funeral Home. Farano joined the CCS six years ago and has worked on its Daffodil Days and pink ribbon campaigns. "(I) just fell, if you will, in love with the staff there and given the effect cancer has had in my personal life... it was just, I thought, a valuable use of my time," he said. "With my job, I see the effects cancer has on families and the devastation that it can bring...." Farano also noted the CCS and its local unit, headquartered in Oakville, is "very much a grassroots community-based organization. You feel it is part of the community, working for the community."
