D 1' THE OAKVILLE BEAVER ' * W ednesday, M arch 2 9 ,2 0 0 0 YOU WOULDN'T I TRUST JUST ANYONE |TO DRIVE YOUR CAR, SO WHY TRUST JUST ANY COMPANY TO INSURE IT? John Baumann 6 2 7 Lyons Lane #308, Oakville 842-2225 Volkswagen offers more power options for Golfand Jetta V olkswagen Canada Inc. is now offering its popular Jetta and Golf models with a new, more powerful four-cylinder engine option. With more engine options in the compact car category than any other manufacturer, Volkswagen is now offer ing the refined power of its award-winning 1.8 T, 150-horsepower four-cylin der engine in its 2000 Jetta and Golf models. In the GTI GLS, the 1.8 T engine will be the new standard powerplant, upping its horsepower output from 115 to 150 and giving it a maximum torque of 155 lb.-ft. at just 1,750 revolutions per minute. Translation: this new 2000 version of Volkswagen's famous "pock et rocket" concept can go from a stand ing start to 100 km/h in just 8.0 seconds. In Volkswagen's upcoming 2000 Golf and Jetta models, the 1.8 T engine will become a stand-alone engine option exclusively on the GLS trim levels of both cars. This engine option is one of four possible power choices in the Jetta model lineup, the most offered by any automaker in this car category. In addi tion to the 1.8 T, the Jetta comes with a standard 2.0 litre, 115 horsepower fourcylinder engine and can be ordered with a unique Turbo Direct Injection (TDI) diesel or renowned 174-horsepower VR6 (optional on GLS only and stan dard in GLX). Volkswagen's innovative five-valve technology is employed in the 1.8 T four-cylinder engine. Providing sub stantial, six-cylinder-like power and performance, this remarkably efficient powerplant uses a turbocharger and an intercooler for cool, high-density intake air N a ba£ic ingredient of power. Of course, its five valves per cylinder pro vide for excellent top-end breathing, and the double overhead camshafts pro vide for optimal valve control. All of this is built into a compact and efficient long-stroke 1.8 litre four-cylinder pack age. The result: 150 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 155 lbs. ft. of torque all the way from 1,750 to 4,600 rpm N an extraordinarily flat torque curve that provides plenty of pulling power from the low end through the top. With the 1.8 T, the Jetta with a fivespeed manual transmission can achieve a 0-to-100 km/h mark in just 8.2 sec- 2 0 0 0 V o lk s w a g e n J e t ta 2 0 0 0 3 0 0 M C h r y s le r Chrysler's got you covered with 300M The 300M recalls Chrysler's past glory as a builder of quick, luxurious motor cars. Introduced last year, the 300M takes up where the 300L left off 34 years ago, how ever this time Chrysler infused the big sedan with more European flavor. In fact, the 300M has been kept to within five metres in length to meet legal requirements for export. To accomplish this, tjie car's front and rear clips are shorter than the other LH cars. Under the hood, the 300M features a 3.5-litre SOHC V6 rated at 253 horsepow er linked to Chrysler's four-speed AutoStick automatic transmission, the per fect match for a performance-oriented machine. According to Chrysler, the 300M will go 0-100 km-h in a hair more than eight seconds, which is not bad for a luxuryskewed sedan. The turn of the millennium brings a number of small revisions to the 300M, including a reworked rear suspension that reduces noise, some chrome bits inside, the addition of rear-seat cupholders and several new exterior hues. The 300M contains about the same luxury content as the LHS, and lists for slightly less money. So the choice is yours, the Euro or North American look. Either way, Chrysler's got you covered. Type: Sedan Base price: $39,700 Base engine (hp): 3.5-litre SOHC V6 (253) Optional engine: None Layout:" Front-engine, front-wheel drive Transmission: Four-speed automatic with AutoStick Fuel consumption (1/100 km, cty/hwy): 12.9/8.1 Safety: Front airbags, ABS onds. Volkswagen's 1.8 T with five-valve technology offers significant advan tages over conventional two- and fourvalve engines, in that it allows for greater operating efficiency. This trans lates into more torque and power with optimal fuel consumption. In the Golf, Jetta and GTI, the 1.8 T with a manual transmission has a fuel economy rating of 11.9 litres/lOOkm in the city and 9.2 litres/100km on the highway. With an automatic transmis sion, the figures are 12.8 litres/lOOkm and 10 litres/100km respectively. In the Volkswagen GTI, the 1.8 T will become the standard engine in the base GTI GLS model. The GTI GLX version comes with Volkswagen's highpowered six-cylinder VR6. Volkswagen is the only car-maker offering a V6 engine option in the Jetta, Golf or GTI competitive car segments. The Jetta GLS, Golf GLS and GTI GLS with the 1.8 T comes equipped with Volkswagen's ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) system. This system over lays an EDI (Electronic Differential Lock) that is enabled at speeds of up to 38 kilometres per hour. It detects wheel slippage and applies braking force to that particular wheel. Working in con junction with EDI, the ASR system uses sophisticated electronics to control throttle response to maximize traction and minimize slipping. With this new feature, which can be deactivated at the 2 0 0 0 V o lk s w a g e n G o lf push of a button, Volkswagen has added to the sense of surefootedness that comes with the ownership of a Volkswagen. A standard security feature for all Jettas and Golfs (including GTI models) is the Volkswagen Immobilizer. The Immobilizer is a theft-deterrent device that adds a new layer of protection to Volkswagen's standard anti-theft alarm system. Every time the car is started, the Immobilizer control unit must recog nize the special key. Without the coded key, the car cannot be started. Like all Volkswagens, the Jetta, Golf and GTI GLS models come with a wealth of standard items unattainable anywhere else in the compact class. A short list includes front side airbags; a premium eight-speaker cas sette stereo with CD prep (with the option of a dealer-installed, in-dash CD player); four-disc ABS brakes; height and telescoping steering wheel; heated remote mirrors; central remote locking; a centre-cut folding key; two power out lets; a string attachment to the fuel cap; a brake wear indicator on the dash; a glare repelling gray shade band on the front window; power one-touch up and down (front only) windows; cruise con trol; and a centre armrest.
